Contrary to alliance partner BJP’s stand on dealing with Pakistan, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Friday sought Islamabad’s cooperation in maintaining peace in the state

"Pakistan has to help us as we both have to live together. Pakistan must understand we are neighbours and Indians and Pakistanis are the same people,” she said while addressing the Police Commemoration Day function in Zeewan on the outskirts of Srinagar
While quoting former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s statement that "friends can be changed but not neighbours”, Mehbooba said that uncertainty and violence on the border impact the local population most and derail the government’s efforts for ushering in a new era of development

Referring to the internal and external peace process initiated by Vajpayee, she said that today, again with a robust mandate on his back, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has the opportunity to resolve the Kashmir issue in the interest of peace and stability of the state and the region

The chief minister urged Pakistan to reciprocate with an open mind and in good faith to the peace initiatives. She also supported the idea of bringing back Kashmiri youth who have joined militant outfits
"My appeal to the police and the security forces is to try to see that our children who have gone into militancy return home. Those who are missing for years, whenever possible, instead of encounters in which they are killed, bring them back home and make them part of the mainstream,” Mehbooba said
