Baripada, May 12 : Mayurbhanj District Primary Teachers' Association (MDPTA) has expressed its shock and surprise at the decision of district administration to run the midday meal programme in primary schools during the summer vacation.

MDPTA General Secretary Bimal Kumar Acharya said the Director of Schools and Mass Education has already notified that the schools will remain closed for summer vacation from May 2 to June 16.

But the authority has decided to run the midday meal in at least two Notified Area Councils and 18 drought-hit blocks of Mayurbhanj district during the summer vacation.

Mercury, he said had shot up to 40 degrees Celsius at the district headquarters here during the last couple of days and denizens almost everywhere experienced sizzling heat.

Under this scenario, Mr Acharaya said, "it would be not wise to expose the children to the gruelling heat".

The MDPTA strongly voiced the demand to declare the midday meals as an emergency programme, ensure payment of special incentive or allowance for the teachers for running midday meals centres during the summer vacation and make provisions for compensation for teachers who may fall sick for running the midday meals centres in the scorching sun.

The DPTA further said the government's decision on these issues should be made known to teachers by May 15, or else they would be forced to stop running the midday meals centres during the summer vacation, the DPTA further observed.
