Delhi, Nov 7: The first Test match between West Indies and India was nicely poised at the end of the second day here at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi. After being bowled out by India for 304, the West Indies bowlers surprised everyone by dismissing the hosts for 209 but found themselves floundering immediately thereafter losing two quick wickets in their second innings.
Earlier, the visitors’ first innings didn’t stretch for too long in the morning session. Pragyan Ojha took three more wickets to finish with career best figures of six for 72 while R Ashwin and Ishant Sharma took one wicket each to bowl the West Indies out for 304. Ishant’s solitary wicket was that of Shivnarine Chanderpaul (118), the centurion trapped lbw by the Indian pacer bowling from around the wicket.
The Indian openers began their innings shortly before lunch in what was a dramatic passage of play. Fidel Edwards, bowling at good pace, found the edge of Gautam Gambhir’s bat on a few occasions but the opener survived as the ball didn’t carry to the slips. Edwards even knocked over Virender Sehwag’s stumps in the final over before lunch only to discover that he had overstepped the bowling crease by a couple of inches.
Having survived that period, Sehwag and Gambhir resumed after lunch and dominated the West Indies attack; the 50-run mark was broached in just 8.3 overs. Gambhir hit 41 off an equal number of balls before he was unfortunately run out at the non-striker’s end off a straight drive from Sehwag that clipped Darren Sammy’s fingers.
One freak dismissal was followed by another as Sehwag (55 off 46) was stumped by a sharp piece of work by wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh while he tried to sweep the ball down to fine-leg. Those two wickets ushered in a collapse for the hosts as Sachin Tendulkar (7), VVS Laxman (1), Yuvraj Singh (23), MS Dhoni (0) and R Ashwin (0) fell in quick succession to leave India wobbling at 154 for seven.
A battling half-century by Rahul Dravid along with a 49-run stand between Dravid and Ishant Sharma (17) then took India past the 200-run mark. However, after part-timer Marlon Samuels ended Ishant’s resistance, Ravi Rampaul dismissed Dravid (54) and Umesh Yadav (0) off successive deliveries to give the visitors a crucial 95-run lead on the basis of the first innings.
Despite the ordinary batting performance, India showed that they were prepared to fight their way back into this match as R Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha took one wicket each to send the West Indies openers back at the start of the latter’s second innings. The visitors finished Day 2 at 21 for the loss of two wickets with Kirk Edwards (15) and nightwatchman Fidel Edwards (0) out in the middle and the hosts trailing the visitors by 116 runs.
Brief scores:
At end of Day 2: West Indies 1st innings 304 all out in 108.2 overs (Shivnarine Chaderpaul 118, Pragyan Ojha 6/72) and West Indies 2nd innings 21/2 in 14.0 overs (Kirk Edwards 15, Fidel Edwards 0, Pragyan Ojha 1/7); India 1st innings 209 all out in 52.5 overs (Virender Sehwag 55, Rahul Dravid 54, Darren Sammy 3/35)
At end of Day 1: West Indies 1st innings 256/5 in 91.0 overs (Shivnarine Chaderpaul 111*, Kraigg Brathwaite 63, Pragyan Ojha 3/58, R Ashwin 2/79)
