While we are still struggling with mosquito coils, machines with liquid mosquito repellent, and smelly lotions, LG Electronics has launched a TV with “Mosquito Away technology”, which claims to get rid of all mosquitoes in a house in a soundless, odorless and invisible manner. The LG Mosquito Away TV, is equipped with an Ultra Sonic device which once activated, uses the sound wave technology to make mosquitoes fly away without emitting any harmful radiations. The pricing of the LG TV starts from Rs 26,900 (for 32-inch) and goes up to Rs 47,500 (for 42-inch).
Now, we can’t tell how effective this mosquito-repelling technology will be, because even the machine-based repellents that actually have the primary function of killing mosquitoes barely do any good. But this is not the first time someone has launched a gadget or device to repel mosquitoes and insects.
In fact, it isn’t even the first time LG has launched a gadget equipped with this technology. Back in 2014, LG had launched an air conditioner that came with a dedicated mode for a mosquito-free environment in a room. But if you think about it, how many mosquitoes actually survive in an air conditioned room. Anatomically, mosquitoes are cold-blooded insects and they need over about 26 degrees to survive. The point of an air-conditioner would be lost if you maintained a room temperature of 26 degrees or higher. So why does the AC even need the technology?
Interestingly enough, back in 2012, there was also a Brazilian radio station called Band FM that claimed that their listeners could chuck the smelly lotions and the rolled up newspaper and just listen to the station to repel mosquitoes. The radio station said that they were broadcasting a high-frequency 15kHz under its music, unable to be heard by humans, that frequency could ward away the mosquitoes. However, soon after scientists rubbished the whole concept.
Similarly, in order to combat with the increasing cases of Malaria and Dengue in New Delhi, Indian radio station Red FM had started the initiative ‘Red FM Bajaa, Machchar Bhagaa.’ Like the Brazilian radio station, even Red FM claimed to play certain frequency between 14 kHz to 20 kHz under the music, which would shoo away mosquitoes. Apparently, the frequency resembled the sound of the flapping wings of a dragonfly, who are prey on mosquitoes, hence the sound keeps the mosquitoes away.
Then there are mosquito repellent wrist bands! Apparently, you just tie the band around your child’s wrist and you don’t need to worry a bit about the deadly mosquito bites. These bands claim to repel mosquitoes using aroma from natural plants.
Other than these gadgets, there are also mobile applications that claim to repel mosquitoes. Similar to the other gadgets, these applications emit soundwaves at a particular frequency that repulse mosquitoes from around the smartphone user. Anti-Mosquito Sonic Repeller on iOS and Mosquito Repellent on Android are examples of such apps. But we cannot confirm if any of these apps are actually effective.
There is no denying that such technologies, if effective, are the need of the hour in a country like ours, however, some of the technologies above mentioned sound more like a gimmick than actually being a contribution to the solution.
