Features
The HS201G employs the DLP projection system and has a native resolution of 800x600 pixels, which is offered by sub-Rs 30,000 entry-level DLP projectors. Larger projectors use powerful halogen lamps for projection. But since this projector is too compact to handle the heat emitted by a halogen lamp, it uses a powerful LED lamp. LED lamps offer two advantages; they don’t heat up much and they consume less power. But the drawback is that they aren’t very bright. Halogen lamps have a brightness of over 2000 ANSI lumens, but the LED lamp in this projector has a rated brightness of 300 ANSI lumens, which restricts the size of projection. The projector draws power from a 19 V adapter and consumes only 85 Watts when functioning.
LG has provided an array of video inputs, which allows you to connect a wider range of video sources. The rear panel has composite and HDMI inputs along with the standard D-sub port. Component input is supported via a component-to-D-sub dongle, which is included in the package. A pair of 3.5 mm jacks is provided for feeding the audio and sound output. The presence of HDMI input is abig bonus, allowing you to connect laptops, Blu-ray players and gaming consoles. Also, it’s hassle-free because digital video and audio signals are carried over a single cable. If the resolution of the source video is higher than 800x600 (720p or 1080p for example), the output is automatically downscaled to 800x600 pixels by the projector.
USB host
The HS201G can play media off USB flash drives and external hard drives thanks to the USB host feature. The native firmware can play DivX videos and MP3 files and display JPEG files. The media player has a separate user interface, from which you can choose what you wish to play (photos, music and movies). You begin with navigating to the folder in which media files are located. Next, you have to choose the files you wish to play/view and select play from the popup menu. A ‘Mark’ button is provided on the remote control to select/deselect files. In the case of photos and videos, a preview window is displayed to the left of the list, which mentions the resolution and file size. Images can be displayed as slideshows with background music, but you have to specify the folder with MP3 files on the storage device that you wish to be played as background music. The slide duration can be set (slow, medium and fast), but there are no transition effects. On exiting the USB host interface, the projector switches back to the connected source. The only drawback (and a big one) we found here is that you cannot resume video playback from the point where you stopped in the previous session. The video starts playing right from the beginning and you have to fast forward until you reach the point where you stopped.
Performance
The optimal projection size of the HS201G is 62 inches from a throw distance of 6 feet. At this size, you get a good balance of size, brightness and contrast. Beyond that, you’ll need an absolutely dark room. You can go way up to a whopping 105 inches from a throw distance of 10 feet. The color reproduction and black levels are excellent, but you’ll have to adjust the color settings and white balance initially, because the colors you get with the built in presets are a bit oversaturated. Like most DLP projectors, this one too suffers a bit from the rainbow effect. This is very apparent in dark scenes with bright objects in motion. The DivX video playback via USB host was smooth and the picture quality was very good.
