Lasith Malinga named Sri Lanka's T20 skipper

Sri Lanka have named Lasith Malinga as the captain of the national T20 squad till March 2015. Malinga replaces Dinesh Chandimal, who at 23, became Sri Lanka's youngest captain in any format last year.

Malinga led Sri Lanka in both the semifinal and final matches of the recently-concluded ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh. Chandimal, the official captain, had opted out of both the games due to poor form. Left-handed batsman Lahiru Thirimanne, who did well in both the Asia Cup and World Twenty20, has been made Malinga's deputy.

Thirimanne will be the vice-captain of the ODI team, too. Angelo Mathews remain captain till March 2015. Sri Lanka will be touring England and Ireland shortly. Against England, Sri Lanka will play five ODIs and a T20. Earlier, the Lankans, who won both the Asia Cup and the World Twenty 20, will play two ODIs against Ireland.

After the T20 retirement of Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, Sri Lankan selectors are showing a clear indication of grooming the next generation leaders. Mathews definitely has been a success while Chandimal failed.
