The Hobart Hurricanes batsman Ben Dunk has been named the Player of the Tournament for this summer's Big Bash League after topping the run tally with 348 at 49.71.

Dunk finished one vote ahead of the Melbourne Stars opener Luke Wright, who was third on the run list, and the Sydney Sixers allrounder Moises Henriques finished in third place. It has been a breakout season in the short format for Dunk, 26, who played for the Sydney Thunder in the first BBL but did not play a match in last season's tournament.

This summer, Dunk has thrived in the opening role for the Hurricanes and has made two of the three highest scores during the tournament, with his 96 against the Thunder and 87 against the Heat. Dunk's efforts have helped the Hurricanes reach the semi-finals and he will be a key player for them against the Stars on Tuesday as they aim to progress to the decider for the first time.

"They're certainly under a lot of pressure," Dunk said of the Melbourne Stars ahead of the semi-final. "You don't want to go through a whole season undefeated and lose a semi. So that's something we'll try to play on."

Originally a wicketkeeper-batsman from Queensland, Dunk moved south to Tasmania during the 2012 off-season and also joined the Hurricanes at the same time, although he did not debut for them until this season. The Player of the Tournament in the first season of the BBL was David Hussey and last summer the title went to Aaron Finch.
