Kerala will be declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) state on Tuesday, making it the first densely populated state in India to be so. Chief Minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan will officially declare the state as ODF at a function to be held at Central Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram today at 4 pm. Green protocol will be observed as part of the function. Union Minister for Rural Development and Drinking Water and Sanitation, Narendra Singh Tomar will be present on the occasion.

The state government could complete this campaign as part of Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) programme, within a short span of three months time. 1,74,720 toilets were constructed in 941 Grama Panchayats across all districts. Along with team Suchitwa Mission, the group effort of self-motivated and dedicated workforce from Grama Panchayats, voluntary groups, resource persons, village extension officers, NCC, NSS etc contributed to the successful completion of the project. This campaign will benefit around 8 lakh people as a result of construction of 1,75000 toilets.

Each beneficiary was given Rs. 12000 as grant from Swachh Bharat Gramin and Rs. 3400 from state government. An amount of Rs. 98 crore was allocated to the state of Kerala from Swachh Bharat Mission for the completion of this campaign.
