Kaspersky discovers malware behind hacked Steam accounts

Kaspersky Lab researchers have discovered a malware that they consider to be the prime suspect behind hacked Steam accounts. Steam is a popular online gaming platform owned by Valve and includes hits like Counter Strike: Global Offensive and Dota 2.
The malware, named Steam Stealer, is available for just $30 and comes in different versions, with distinct features, free upgrades, user manuals, custom advice for distribution, a Kaspersky statement said. Such malware usually cost $500, but the low price of Steam Stealer makes it a "highly attractive" option for "wannabe cybercriminals."
Steam's gaming platform has over 100 million registered users and over 77,000 accounts are hacked every month, according to data released by Valve. A hacked Steam account can be sold for as little as $15 on the black market.
Developed by Russian-speaking cybercriminals, Steam Stealer malware, when installed, steals the entire set of Steam configuration files and locates the specific Steam KeyValue file that contains user credentials as well as the information that maintains a user's session. When cybercriminals have obtained this information, they can control the user's account.
Nearly 1,200 samples of different Steam Stealers that have been attacking tens of thousands of users around the world, especially in Russia and other Eastern European countries, have been discovered so far. Kasperky estimates the market of stealing and selling users' gaming items to be worth thousands of dollars.
Steam Stealers trojan groups discovered by Kaspersky Lab include: Trojan.Downloader.Msil.Steamilik, Trojan.Msil.Steamilik and Trojan-psw.Msil.Steam, among others. Targets of these trojans are largely spread around the globe with Russia, the US, Europe (France and Germany), India and Brazil, leading the way.
