Jitu Rai on Wednesday won a gold medal in men’s 50m Pistol final at the Shooting World Cup in New Delhi. The 29-year-old India set a world record as he ended with 230.1 points against his name. His compatriot Amapreeet Singh clinched silver medal after finishing second with 226.9 points. Iran’s Vahid Golkhandan claimed bronze medal with 208 points.

Courtesy Jitu’s gold and Amanpreet’s silver, India now occupy fourth place on the medals tally with a total of five medals. China leads the tally with 12 medals (six gold and as many silver) while Japan and Australia hold the second and third position respectively.

At the ongoing world cup, Jitu Rai has already won a bronze medal in the 10m Air Pistol category. He lost to Japan’s Tomoyuki Matsuda and Vietnam’s Xuan Vinh Hoang in the final.

Earlier this week, Jitu pairing up with Heena Sidhu also won gold for India in 10m pistol mixed team event. However, since the mixed event is being tested in line with IOC’s aim to achieve gender equality in its 2020 Tokyo Olympics program, medals are not being awarded even though the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) executive committee has ratified the recommendations.

This is Jitu’s ninth world cup medal while Amanpreet is playing his maiden world cup. He had also qualified for the Rio Olympics and finished eighth in the finals. Last year.
