A joint venture between Reliance Industries' Jio Platforms and Luxembourg-based SES to provide gigabit fibre internet has won approval from the Indian space regulator to operate satellites there, a government executive said.

The three approvals issued to Orbit Connect India - which aims to provide satellite-based high-speed internet access - come as companies from Amazon.com to Elon Musk's Starlink have been vying for the go-ahead to launch satellite communication services in the world's most populous nation.

How to order ??? Have been waiting for such DTH Internet ISP since a decade.
This is aimed mainly for remote locations where traditional fiber connectivity or even Air fiber service isn't feasible. This will be commercially available soon but the pricing will be pretty high compared to traditional wired or wireless broadband.

Agreed

But if their main competition is FTTH then the prices should be competitive aswell.

Originally when DTH based satellite TV was launched, people thought the prices would be a bit high compared to traditional cable tv due to cost of infrastructure and medium of transmission

But now the prices are same . Let's hope for the best as jio is known for very competitive pricing

The difference between DTH and Satellite broadband is that with DTH the operator has to beam a fixed set of channels which occupy a fixed bandwidth on the transponders irrespective of the number of subscribers who have the dish antenna installed at their premises. More subscribers doesn't increase the bandwidth requirement, on the contrary it brings down the cost of operation since it gets divided amongst them.
But with satellite broadband, each subscriber will have their own download and upload requirements which means more bandwidth being utilised on the satellites which will increase the cost of operation which will be passed on to the user in the form of higher subscription charge.

It almost took two decades to bring cable price up. I was paying cable guy 100 for all channels when DTH was charging 250 for few GEC and movie channel.
Cable was cheaper than DTH because cable operators were underreporting subscribers.. it was unregulated analog crap with no tracking. Cable got closer to DTH now because of digitization of Cable. No more randomly attaching a Cable on rooftop to some random Cable and connecting to TV.

"gigabit fibre internet" lol why do these id*ots like to throw gigabit and fibre at everything?!! It's not like they are laying fibre cable from satellite in the sky to ground 😂
