Anyone got 5g in kochi,Kerala? Is it just me or everyone gets that feel...
Ok. But I have issues with tethering reduced to 2mbps here in our area. Let's see if that stays or not. Customer care is of no help as expected. Think I have to again write to MD and CEO of jio to get my issue fixed.@Aniruddha Dhar No issue while tethering on iOS. Getting 600-700 Mbps speeds Wifi 6 tethering on my PC.
Now I am waiting for iPadOS update to enable 5G as I can finally get max gigabit speeds either through USB4 or via Wifi6e present on latest 2022 Pro models.
Fun fact: I am waiting for 5G update on iPad just for getting theoretical 1 Gbps speeds while tetheringand also e-peen. I don’t plan to use it anyway as I got 1 gbps TataPlay connection.
Very informative post…10 points of 5G observation and advice for Mumbai users but generally applicable to entire India:
- Jio 5G has reached a good coverage level in Mumbai if your handset supports both Bands n28 and n78. I traveled extensively in Mumbai and not even once it switched to 4G
- Calls are still made over 4G as evident by logo change when dialing a number. However, Jio is randomly testing VoNR at some sites as my iPhone did not switch back to LTE/4G few times. It might even be an iOS 16 bug.
- Average speedtest gives 100-1200 Mbps speeds on n78 band while 10-100 Mbps on n28 band.
- Be careful, if you are getting low speedtest result, it can also be 4G because many phones still show 5G symbol even if they have already fallen back on 4G. So your 4G data might get consumed.
- Airtel 5G coverage is Third Class at best. Their n78 coverage is mere 100m around the radius of the tower. So there is no blanket coverage like Jio. It might be due to NSA implementation compared to Jio’s SA.
- When you are finally connected to Airtel 5G, n78 band gives 100-600 Mbps speeds. Airtel’s other 5G bands like n1, n3, n8 give same as 4G speeds.
- No one has deployed mmWave band n258 yet. No phone is currently for sale in India having support for n258 either. You can buy iPhone 13, 14 models from US which have support. It is going to be deployed for general use on high streets, stadiums, malls, crowded stations as per Jio engineer and not for FWA (Fixed Wireless Access) as speculated. They are in the process of procuring the equipment to deploy soon.
- iPhone users can dial *3001#12345#* to enter field test mode to check out which 5G or 4G band you are connected to.
- cell_rsrp tells you the signal strength. It is in negative so lower the number, stronger the signal. Range is -50 dBm to -110 dBM where -50 dBm being strongest signal.
- You can check your android 5G bands on gsmarena website by searching for your device name and model. Always buy devices with n1, n3, n8, n28, n78 bands. Optionally (but not required) bands to get are n40, n41 and n258
I’ve updated to iOS 16.2 but no 5G signal. I’ve turned on Always 5G in my mobile data settings. Or is it invite only?I’m in Delhi today and wanted to use 5G, do I need to change any setting or plans or just upgrade the software to iOS 16.2 on my iPhone 12?
