AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa, who was sentenced to four years’ simple imprisonment and imposed a Rs. 100-crore fine for her offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act, was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court on Friday.
The interim bail is applicable till December 18, 2014. The Chief Justice has asked for paperbook to be ready by then, after which a date will be set for the appeal hearing.
“Not a day's time more will be given after December 18,” Chief Justice of India Dattu said
The Supreme Court relief came on the assurance by Jayalalithaa's lawyer that there would not be any attempts to delay the appeal in the Karnataka High Court.
AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa sought relief from incarceration on the grounds that she is a woman, 66-years-old and suffers from ailments.
A public interest litigation writ petition was filed in the Supreme Court on Thursday for a direction to the Karnataka government to shift Jayalalithaa from the Central Prison at Parappana Agrahara in Bangalore to the Central Prison, Chennai
