Australia is close to poaching Jason Gillespie from English cricket to be the national team’s new full-time fast bowling coach, a report said on Wednesday.

Head coach Darren Lehmann has been on the look-out for a replacement since Craig McDermott stepped down at the end of the World Twenty20 in India this year.

He said last month that the highly-regarded Gillespie, who has been head coach at Yorkshire for four years and was last year touted as a candidate for the England coaching job, was high on his list.

At the time, the former Australian fast bowler said he was committed to the reigning English county champions.

But the Sydney Morning Herald reported Wednesday that discussions about bringing him home were now at an advanced level and his services could be secured next month.

“We’re speaking with a number of candidates but by no means is anything confirmed,” a Cricket Australia spokesperson said in response.

The Herald said the pending appointment would propel Gillespie into the frame to eventually replace Lehmann, alongside frontrunner Justin Langer.

Ex-Tasmania quick Adam Griffith is temporarily filling the bowling coaching role for Australia’s upcoming one-day tri-series in the West Indies, which also includes South Africa.

Former South African pace spearhead Allan Donald then takes over for their Test tour of Sri Lanka.

Donald has said he is interested in the job full-time with reports also mentioning former Australian pacemen Ryan Harris and Andy Bichel, along with New Zealand’s Shane Bond, as possible contenders.

I have not applied for any role with Australia: Jason Gillespie

Jason Gillespie, the former Australian paceman, has denied reports that he is set to be installed as Australia's permanent bowling coach.
The Age newspaper reported on Tuesday (May 24) that "advanced discussions" had taken place between the current Yorkshire coach and Cricket Australia (CA) but Gillespie denies that has taken place.

"Just to be absolutely clear, I have not spoken to CA about a role with the Australian cricket team," Gillespie told foxsports.com.au on Wednesday (May 25). "Darren (Lehmann) mentioned my name in a radio interview a while back (in April) regarding me being involved, so it stands to reason that I will be linked to certain positions.

"Bear in mind, I have not applied for any role with CA nor do I intend to," he added. "I am currently very happy in my roles with Yorkshire CCC and the Adelaide Strikers."

The position has been vacant after Craig McDermott stepped down as the team's bowling coach in the aftermath of the T20 WC. Adam Griffith, Western Australia bowling coach, and South African bowling legend Allan Donald will be Australia's interim bowling coaches during upcoming tours of the Caribbean and Sri Lanka, respectively.

"We're speaking with a number of candidates but by no means is anything confirmed," a Cricket Australia spokesperson told cricket.com.au on Tuesday. "We'll look to make an announcement as soon as the process is complete, with the aim to have the coaching team finalised, at latest, by the start of the 2016-17 Australian summer."

Gillespie's success with Yorkshire has earned rave reviews and some influential English cricket figures, including Nasser Hussain, who were calling for him to be named Peter Moores's successor as England's coach last year. The 41-year- old ultimately lost out to compatriot Trevor Bayliss.

Other candidates for the Australia bowling coach role include former Australian pacemen Ryan Harris and Andy Bichel, while Shane Bond, the ex-New Zealand quick, has also been reportedly sounded out.
