Japan will enter the Pepsi ICC East-Asia Pacific Division 1 in Port Moresby with newfound confidence after an intense couple of months of training since their last tournament.
It has been well documented that Japan performed considerably below the standard they expect of themselves at the recent World Cricket League Division 7 event in Botswana, however Coach Chris Ferguson is confident his side can learn from the mistakes made at that tournament and begin the re-building process in PNG.
"That is the nature of international cricket," said Ferguson. "There is always another tournament coming up and you need to respond quickly."
"We made mistakes in Botswana but the players have reviewed their own performances, been honest with themselves and the team, and have put in a lot of hard work over the past six weeks to rectify the problems that we encountered," said Ferguson.
Having made several changes to the line-up that played in Botswana, Ferguson is hoping the new faces can bring a range of ideas and skills to the table that can carry his side forward to World Cricket League Division 8 next year.
"It is important heading into a tournament such as World Cricket League to establish your squad early and create a team where everyone knows what their role is," he said. "We are looking to start that process in PNG."
While stopping short of declaring too many results driven goals for the tournament, Ferguson has very definitive ideas about what he wants to see from his players.
"In PNG we are looking to stick to the plans that we have put in place, execute those plans and put in some quality performances," said.
One of the people who will be crucial to ensuring the Japanese keep to these plans will be their new captain Tatsuro Chino who after making his debut back in 2004 is thrilled to step up into a leadership role.
"I am very proud to be captaining my country for the first time," said Chino. "We had a challenging time in Botswana and as a new leader and a senior player I hope that I am able to install some self-belief in the side."
Three of the players who Japan will be looking at to provide the spark that was missing in Botswana are Hanif Khan, Qureshi Naeemuddin and Jarrad Shearer who will all be making their debuts at this tournament.
The Japan also side contains a number of players from different cultural backgrounds and Chino says that this is considered an advantage by his team.
"We are multicultural team that comes from a range of backgrounds with our management coming from New Zealand and players coming from Australia, Pakistan, India and of course Japan," he said. "But we are one team and one nation. Everyone involved in this side is proud to be representing Japan and helping to grow the sport in our country."
Japan has the bye in Round 1 of the competition and will face Fiji in Round 2 on Monday 4 July at 2:15pm local time.
