James Taylor retires from cricket due to serious heart condition

England and Nottinghamshire batsman James Taylor's career has been sadly brought to an end by a serious heart condition. Taylor originally withdrew from last week's fixture against Cambridge MCCU with what was believed to be a viral condition. However, specialist scans revealed yesterday that the 26-year-old has the very serious heart condition, ARVC (Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Arrhythmia).

ARVC is an inherited ailment which is caused by genetic defects of the parts of heart muscle known as desmosomes. The proteins that help build the heart muscles do not develop properly leading to blood being ineffectively pumped to various parts of the body. The condition is said to be progressive, which means it could get worse unless properly treated.

Taylor will undergo operation in the coming days to help him get better, but whether he can sufficiently recover to play competitive cricket again is doubtful. The condition is similar to that of Fabrice Muamba, a Bolton Wanderers player who suffered a cardiac arrest during a game in March 2012. Muamba's heart had stopped for 78 minutes when after the cardiac arrest, but the England footballer was resuscitated and made a miraculous recovery. Muramba was asked to retire from professional football soon after.

England Team Director Andrew Strauss spoke about the shocking development, saying he was saddened what had happened. "It is both shocking and saddening to hear that James' career has been cut short in such a sudden and unexpected manner," Strauss said.

Taylor played the first of his seven Tests against South Africa in 2012 and was part of the England team that won famously against the same opposition last winter. The middle-order batsman also played 27 ODIs and was captain for England's trip to Ireland last May.

Born on January 6, 1990 in Nottingham, James William Arthur Taylor was considered as one of the most exciting prospects to emerge from England. A right-handed batsman and occasional right-arm leg break bowler, Taylor made his First Class debut in 2008 and made a fine impression in his first County season. In 2009, Taylor became the youngest Leicestershire batsman to complete 1,000 championship runs in a season.

"Throughout his career, he has constantly impressed with his determination to make the absolute most of his ability, and it is immensely cruel that such a hard working player will be unable to fulfill his great potential in the international arena. The ECB will work closely with Nottinghamshire and together we will do everything possible to help James through this difficult period, and aid him in his recovery," Strauss added.

His maiden Test cap was against the visiting South Africans in 2012 and he made his debut at Leeds in August 2012. Having spent three years at Leicestershire until 2011, Taylor moved to Nottinghamshire in 2012 and has been an integral part of the side.

Nottinghamshire Director of Cricket Mick Newell was also shocked at the news, saying Taylor was a model professional and the most hard working players he's ever known.

"Myself and all of James' teammates and colleagues are terribly sad to hear this news, which comes as a big shock to us all. He is a model professional, the most hard working I've ever known in cricket, making it all the more difficult to accept that his career has been cut short in this way.

"It goes without saying that he has the very best wishes of us all in terms of recovering from his operation, and that we are looking forward to seeing him back at Trent Bridge when he is fit and able," he concluded.

Taylor himself took to twitter to confirm the news, saying this has been the hardest week of his life, but added that is 'here to stay' and he will fight it out.

Several of England's present and ex-players, apart from a host of fans, experts and cricketers from other nations, extended their support to the 26-year-old.

In all, Taylor has represented England 34 times and has scored in excess of 1800 runs. He was earmarked as one of England's more promising prospects with the bat, but unfortunately, the heart condition put an end to his hopes of a rich cricket career.

It's so sad to hear... England team mates would be gutted to see him to retire... Hopefully he make good recovery after surgery & have a normal life.

Good player, it's unfortunate.
