The cyber crime investigation cell (CCIC) of Mumbai police is probing a threat email sent to RBI governor Raghuram Rajan.

According to the police, the email, sent allegedly from an ID belonging to terrorist outfit Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), seems to be a hoax. However, the police are taking no chances and are taking the threat seriously.

"We received an application about the email three weeks ago. We are looking into it," said Mumbai police chief Rakesh Maria. He added that since the ID names the word ISIS hence they were trying to trace the IP address of the sender. A request to the concerned sever has been sent, police said. Rajan had, on his official account, received an email which was sent from an ID [email protected].
The sender threatened to eliminate Raghuram Rajan. It further stated that he was paid money to do so, but if Rajan paid more than that amount, a decision can be taken. However, no amount was mentioned in the email. The email ID was accessed from various countries like the USA, Canada, Australia, Belgium, Italy, Nigeria, Germany, Ukraine and Hong Kong.

Taking no chances, RBI has increased security at all its events including press conferences. All attending RBI events are issued security passes in advance. Security in RBI was tightened after the 26/11 attacks because of the central bank's significance to the economy and also the fact that the building is one the iconic structures of Mumbai. As part of the security measures an adjoining petrol pump was shut down.
