Irani Cup: It's eight in a row for Rest of India

MUMBAI: Rest of India once again won the Irani Cup tie, by virtue of a huge 117-run first-innings lead over Mumbai, in a match which petered out to a drab draw at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.

Suresh Raina struck a half-century to add to his first-innings century, Ambati Rayudu added some more runs to his overnight century to finish with an unbeaten 156 and later, Mumbai opener Wasim Jaffer cracked yet another century, a 101 not out.

Jaffer's ton came off 140 balls and included 10 boundaries. It was the eighth consecutive Irani title for RoI but this is only the second time in the last 14 years that an Irani Cup tie has been decided on the basis of first-innings lead.

Resuming at 296-4, Rest of India continued to build on the lead and eventually declared at 389-5, close to half-an-hour before the stipulated lunch time.

That left Mumbai with 63 mandatory overs to bat and they lost four wickets to reach 160 before play was called off nine overs before the mandatory number.

Mumbai once again lost an opportunity to lay their hands on the Irani Cup, something that they have constantly been failing at since 1997-98, but they have only themselves to blame.
