MUMBAI: After spending Rs 16,347.5 crore on the global media rights of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the next five years, Star India has worked out a telecast plan covering six languages, 10 channels and live streaming on Hotstar service. It will be aired in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Bengali, in addition to English and Hindi. There will be an additional feed on Star Sports Select giving more details around the games.
On the digital front, unlike the previous seasons when there was a fiveminute delay, Star's over-the-top (OTT) service Hotstar will stream the matches live from the next season. We are trying to reinvent the entire experience on Hotstar," said Ajit Mohan, CEO of Hotstar. "We will use technology, which has never been used anywhere. IPL will be streamed live, have fastest commentary and live score updates, even on the lock screen. This is because Star holds allmedia rights for the property. "People can also check-in and share updates with friends and express emotions." Mohan said.
When Hotstar was launched, its positioning was of "go solo", and for IPL, Hotstar is employing a strategy that is more of community building. "Sports can be more fun together," Mohan said.
