In the crucial hearing in Bombay High Court today on the future of Indian Premier League (IPL) matches in drought-hit Maharashtra, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to propose that it is willing to move some of the 19 games to be played out in the state.

Top sources in the cricket body have told India Today TV that five games to be played in Nagpur and Pune are expected to be moved to another venue. Kings XI Punjab is scheduled to play three games in Nagpur, which may now take place in Mohali.

Two Pune playoffs are also likely to be moved, the venue for which has not been decided yet. However, the BCCI will ask the court to let the seven Pune games remain in the city.

The BCCI is hoping to placate the court as far as six IPL games in Mumbai are concerned since it has made arrangements for the sourcing of non-potable water for the Wankhede stadium pitch.

In a severe reprimand last week, the Bombay High Court had asked the BCCI if people suffering due to the severe water crisis in Maharashtra mattered more than cricket. The court had suggested shifting IPL matches out of Maharashtra in view of the severe water crisis afflicting many parts of the state.

"How can you waste water like this...are the people more important or your IPL matches? Only if the water supply to BCCI is cut, you will understand," said a stern division bench of Justice V.M. Kanade and Justice M.S. Karnik.
While the court permitted the inaugural IPL match on Saturday in Mumbai, it posted a PIL hearing to be held today for the remaining matches.

The PIL has been filed by an NGO named Loksatta Movement, which has questioned the need for holding IPL matches in Maharashtra as it would lead to a huge wastage of water when large parts of the state are reeling under severe water shortage.
