The Green Park stadium in Kanpur has been one of the five Test centres for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Come Thursday, this ground will witness cricket under lights when the first ever Indian Premier League (IPL) match will be played as per rescheduled fixtures.
Gujarat Lions, who have made it their home in IPL 9, will take on Gautam Gambhir-led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in an white-ball affair on May 19. People of Kanpur are excited to witness something new and the locals are already thinking it as “Diwali before Diwali” at the ‘bijliwala’ (illuminated) stadium.
According to a report in The Times of India, the stadium is lit with four towers of floodlights, and each tower will accommodate 84 illuminators. The combined illumination of the lights would be 2,400 lux which is more than usual 2,000 lux required for the fixtures of the Indian Premier League. the second match will be held on Saturday when Gujarat Lions take on Mumbai Indians.
Gujarat Lions franchise, owned by Intex Technologies, is all set to play their first game in their adopted venue. It may be recalled that owner Keshav Bansal acknowledged that they received a great support for the Gujarat city and also said that they were happy bring the IPL to Uttar Pradesh, a tradition hub of Indian cricket since ages.
“Fans in Rajkot have been our strength and we are overwhelmed with the love and support we have received from them. It is our honour and privilege to now bring IPL to the state of Uttar Pradesh and play our remaining home matches at Kanpur. We are very excited and enthused by our performance thus far and we are confident of receiving the same love and affection from fans in Kanpur,” Bansal had said.
