Kolkata Knight Riders were dealt a severe blow after John Hastings, the bowling allrounder, was ruled out for the remainder of the Indian Premier League with an ankle injury.

Hastings injured himself during Kolkata’s warm-ups before their clash against Mumbai Indians at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata last week.

Hastings bowled through the pain and was the most economical bowler for Kolkata in their six-wicket loss. Hastings, who returned figures of 2 for 6 from 2.4 overs in Kolkata’s opener against Delhi Daredevils, was replaced by Morne Morkel for their contest against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

“He bowled through a fair bit of pain in the game against Mumbai,” said Simon Katich, Kolkata’s assistant coach, on the eve of the game against Kings XI Punjab. “He had a fair of bit of scans after that and he flew back to Australia. It’s a shame to see his campaign end prematurely.

He had fitted in really well into the game and he had performed well in a couple of games.

Unfortunately, he’ll be doing a lot of rehab instead and working towards getting fit for the West Indies tour for Australia.”

Hastings, who has played 20 One-Day Internationals for Australia since making his debut in 2010, has been named in the Australian ODI squad for the tri-series, involving South Africa and hosts West Indies.

Kolkata are yet to name a replacement, and Katich said the process was on. “We have sent the paperwork to BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India). Nothing has been confirmed regarding the player concerned. Hopefully it will come through in the next few days.”

Despite repeated attempts, Katich did not reveal the identity of the replacement player. Instead, he maintained that Kolkata were interested in acquiring him at the February 6 auction. “It’s someone we had already looked at in the auction. Obviously, we did get John. He was right up there on the priority list when we went for the auctions,” said the former Australian batsman. “We didn’t know if it was going to come through or not, so we had a few other names in mind.”
