BRUSSELS: A Belgian court on
Monday handed out prison
sentences to seven women for
supporting Islamic State and
radicalizing young women to go to
Syria to join its ranks and marry
fighters of the militant organization.
Four of the seven women - five
Belgians, one Dutch and one
Moroccan - were not in court to hear
their convictions and were believed
to be in Syria with female battalions
of Islamic State, the Antwerp-based
court said.

ISLAMABAD: In a first of its kind
deal, Pakistan's spy agency ISI has
entered into an agreement with its
Afghan counterpart over intelligence
sharing and coordinated operations
against Taliban militants.
The accord between Pakistan's Inter-
Services Intelligence and
Afghanistan National Directorate of
Security (NDS) was reached as the
two sides have started cooperation
in the war on terror after years of
bickering and misunderstanding.

BAGHDAD: A column of Shia militia
fighters arrived at a military base
near Ramadi on Monday as Baghdad
moved to retake the western Iraqi
city that has fallen to Islamic State
militants in the biggest defeat for
the government since last summer.
Setting the stage for renewed
fighting over the city, Islamic State
militants advanced in armoured
vehicles from Ramadi towards the
base where the Shia paramilitaries
were massing for a counter-offensive,
witnesses and a military officer said.

SYDNEY: A 6.9-magnitude
earthquake struck off the Solomon
Islands in the Pacific on Thursday,
the US Geological Survey said, but
no tsunami warning was issued.
The quake hit at a depth of 19
kilometres (11 miles), some 184
kilometres from Lata and 487
kilometres from the capital Honiara.
"Based on all available data there is
no tsunami threat from this
earthquake," the Pacific Tsunami
Warning centre said.
 
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's home
minister has announced that mass
graves have been found in the
country's north near detention
camps run by human traffickers, a
report said Sunday.
Home Minister Zahid Hamidi was
quoted by The Star newspaper's
website as saying the graves were
found along the border with
Thailand.
"But we don't know how many there
are. We are probably going to find
more bodies," Zahid was quoted as
saying.
 
KATHMANDU: Three mild tremors on
Sunday struck Kathmandu and
surrounding areas, keeping people
on edge in Nepal, battered by the
April 25 earthquake and aftershocks
that killed nearly 9,000 people.
A tremor measuring 4.2 on the
Richter scale was recorded at 7.06
am with epicentre in Dolakha,
according to the National
Seismological Centre.
A second tremor measuring 4.4 was
recorded at 10.38 am with epicentre
at Dolakha. No casualties were
reported.
