India in West Indies: Probe launched as final Test abandoned due to waterlogged outfield

The Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board have launched an investigation after the fourth and final Test between the West Indies and India lasted just 22 overs due to a waterlogged outfield.

No play was possible at the Queen's Park Oval on Monday's scheduled last day of the match, the fourth consecutive day on which there was no play because of saturated areas around the playing square.

The farcical abandonment came despite long periods of sunshine and desperate efforts of groundstaff to make the surface playable with shovels, pitchforks and leaf blowers.

With the match abandoned as a draw, India won the series 2-0, the first time they have won more than one Test in a series in the Caribbean.

However the Indians surrendered the position of number one Test team in the ICC rankings to Pakistan as they had needed to complete a 3-0 series triumph to stay top.

India had been number one for less than a week after displacing Australia at the top on 17 August.

"As hosts, the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board and QPCC (Queen's Park Cricket Club) regret that limited play was possible in the 4th Test Match between WI and India at the Queen's Park Oval," Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board president Azim Bassarath said in a statement.

"We have jointly launched an investigation to determine what occurred with a view to remedying the situation so that this does not occur in the future," the statement continued.
"Once this has been done it will be presented to the WICB (West Indies Cricket Board)."

Bassarath gave no indication of a time-frame for the conclusion of the investigation.

It is understood that prominent officials of QPCC, who celebrated the 125th anniversary of the club's founding over the Test match weekend, are concerned that the farcical abandonment could jeopardise the venue hosting major international matches in the future Pakistan are scheduled to tour the Caribbean in 2017.

The shambolic finale will be of major concern to the WICB, given that the agreement of the Indians to play four Tests in the Caribbean was seen as a major diplomatic triumph after the abandonment of a tour of India by the West Indies in October 2014.

India subsequently dropped their multi-million dollar compensation claim against the WICB after the tour was cut short amid a players' pay dispute.

West Indies and India will play two Twenty20 Internationals in Lauderhill, Florida, on August 27 and 28 as both teams seek to tap into the huge expatriate Indian population in the United States.

India vs West Indies T20 Series: 5 things you need to know about cricket stadium in Florida

As India-West Indies gear up for a fascinating contest, we bring you few things about Central Broward Regional Park Stadium.

Central Broward Regional Park and Stadium in Lauderhill, Florida is cricket’s newest destination. World champions West Indies and India will take on each other in the United States of America. The two nations meet in a short T20 series, which consists of two T20Is. The matches will take place on August 27 and 28 and will be day games.

Apart from world class players, it is the venue which is the centre of attraction. Cricket in America is something that is rare. We saw last year Cricket All Stars being organised in the USA to promote the game in the region. Former cricketers featured in the T20 league and matches were played in the makeshift cricket stadiums, originally meant for baseball.

However, the Central Broward Regional Park is the only venue in the United States certified by the International Cricket Council. So as India-West Indies gear up for a fascinating contest, we bring you few things about the cricket stadium in Florida.

#1. The ground has hosted four T20 Internationals. In 2010, New Zealand played against Sri Lanka in two-match series. While Kiwis won the first match by 28 runs, Sri Lanka won the second match seven wickets. In 2012, New Zealand and West Indies were involved in a two-match T20 series. West Indies won both the T20Is by 56 and 61 runs respectively.

#2. The ground also hosted six matches of this year’s Caribbean Premier League (CPL T20), including two day-night matches.

#3. Apart from artificial cricket pitches, the Central Broward Regional Park & Stadium has facilities for other sports like soccer, netball, tennis and basketball. The compound also has a water park.

#4. The highest team total at the venue is 209 by West Indies against New Zealand in 2012. Chris Gayle scored unbeaten 85 in that match which is the highest individual score at the ground. Sunil Narine’s 4/12 against New Zealand are the best bowling figures at the venue.

#5. The stadium has a capacity of around 20,000. The park was designed by late architect H.J. Russell and Seawood Builders.

India will slip in ICC T20 ranking if it loses 0-2 in T20Is against West Indies

India will lose their second position in the MRF Tyres ICC T20I Team Rankings if they suffer a 0-2 defeat against two-time World champions West Indies in the two-match series in Florida, USA on August 27 and 28.

India are currently placed on 128 points, four points behind table leader New Zealand, while third-ranked West Indies is on 122 points.

Led by new captain Carlos Brathwaite, who had smashed four consecutive sixes in the ICC World Twenty20 final against England in Kolkata, the West Indies can move to second place on 127 points with a 2-0 win and push India to third place on 124 points.

However, a 2-0 win for India, captain by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, will help it join number-one ranked New Zealand on 132 points but the Asian side will be ranked second when the ratings are calculated beyond the decimal point.

In this scenario, the West Indies will slip to fourth position with 118 points, one point behind South Africa.

A 1-1 series draw will keep India ahead on 128 points with West Indies on 123 points.

The individual performances in the series will also be keenly watched with a player from either side leading the player rankings for batsmen and bowlers.

India's Test captain Virat Kohli heads the MRF Tyres ICC Player Rankings for T20I Batsmen with 837 points. With Australia's Aaron Finch only 34 points behind, Kohli will be looking to consolidate his position at the top.

Rohit Sharma is the next-highest ranked India batsman in 23rd position, while Dhoni, who had led India to victory in the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 title in 2007, is in 50th position but the likelihood of getting more batting opportunities could see him rise in the ranks.

For the West Indies, big-hitting opener Chris Gayle (eighth) and experienced batsman Marlon Samuels (17th) will be looking to move up the ranks with Lendl Simmons (31st), Dwayne Bravo (37th) and Andre Fletcher (48th) also trying to climb the ladder.

The West Indies has two slow bowlers up in the table as top-ranked leg-spinner Samuel Badree and fourth-ranked off-spinner Sunil Narine will be out to garner points with medium-pacer Dwayne Bravo (39th) the next best on the list.

For India, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is in second position in the MRF Tyres ICC Player Rankings for T20I Bowlers after a creditable show in Zimbabwe a few months ago when India won the T20I series 2-1. Ravichandran Ashwin is the other India bowler inside the top 10 in seventh position, while left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja is in 19th spot.

Marlon Samuels is the best-ranked all-rounder from either side at fifth position.
