Team India leave for West Indies

The 16-member Indian squad led by Virat Kohli left here tonight for the West Indies to engage the hosts in a four-Test rubber later this month and in August.

The team was accompanied by its newly appointed head coach Anil Kumble and other support staff.

The squad will open the tour with a two-day game against the West Indies Cricket Board President’s XI at Warner Park in Basseterre, St Kitts on July 9 and 10 followed by a three-day warm-up fixture at the same venue from July 14 to 16.

The opening Test is scheduled at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground in Antigua from July 21 to 25.

Dhawan, Rahul help India make solid start

Shikhar Dhawan registered a well-compiled half-century and was involved in a solid partnership with KL Rahul as India got off to a good start in their first practice match against West Indies Cricket Board President's XI at Warner Park in Basseterre, St Kitts on Saturday (July 9).

With 12 players allowed to play and eleven to take the field, Murali Vijay, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Stuart Binny and Shardul Thakur were the ones to be rested while Mohammad Shami was part of the 12, after Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to bat first.

Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul, who came out to open, weren't in any hurry in their bid to get adjusted to the Caribbean conditions. Although their scoring rate wasn't all that brisk, the openers batted with application and were largely untroubled on a pitch that appeared to be easy on the batsmen, not offering much for the pacers despite the presence of a cloud cover.

Even the spinners hardly got any assistance as Rahul and Dhawan built a steady partnership, taking India past 50 in the 20th over, with five fours coming in that period. The opening pair upped the scoring rate after bringing up the half-century stand, scoring at six an over as they made sure to put away any loose delivery that was on offer.

Dhawan, who brought up an 88-ball fifty in the 26th over with his seventh four, remained unbeaten on 51 while Rahul was not out on 37 when the lunch break was taken, with India seven short of the 100-run mark. Damion Jacobs was the most expensive of the Board President XI's bowlers, going at 5.6 an over.

Brief scores: India 93/0 in 28 overs (Shikhar Dhawan 51*, KL Rahul 37*) vs West Indies Board President's XI
