Rahul set to come in for injured Vijay
India were forced to make one change to their playing XI leading into the second Test against West Indies at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica, starting Saturday (July 30) with M Vijay being ruled out. Vijay was struck on the thumb in the first Test in Antigua, a delivery from Shannon Gabriel, comfortably the quickest of the West Indian bowlers, getting a ball to bounce awkwardly.
Vijay, who made 7 in the first Test, did not suffer a fracture and was initially believed to only be a bit sore. While he did not take the field in the two West Indian innings that followed, it was widely expected that he would be fit in time for the second Test.
However, when it was clear that he could not take part either in the net session or the fielding drills on the day before the match, the team management announced that he was ruled out.
This meant KL Rahul would get another opportunity to showcase his ability in the longest form of the game. Rahul, who enjoyed a good run in the Indian Premier League and then cashed in against Zimbabwe, scoring 196 runs while being dismissed only once in three One-Day Internationals.
“Well, Rahul's been in a very good zone. He scored runs in the practice games, he scored in Zimbabwe, we all know that. He had a great IPL season. I think that was the turnaround for confidence as far as he's concerned. Last year, he had a good tour to Sri Lanka, got a hundred there. Again, didn't play against South Africa,” said Virat Kohli. “It's more a case of a guy waiting for an opportunity. You can see that with him. You can sense it. He wants to play. He's batting really well, he wants to make it count. He wants to get big runs. I'm confident of his abilities. He's pretty compact, he's a solid opener and he's a great fielder as well. Gives you that wicket-keeping option as well, in case something happens to Saha. He's all in all, he's a great package for the team and it's great to see that he's going to get a Test match. KL is excited. KL is ready. KL is batting really well and that's obviously a very good thing for the team.”
At the same time, Kohli felt for Vijay, who was forced to sit out. “Obviously, unfortunately, Vijay has to miss out because of injury. Not good for him,” said Kohli. “He's someone who has always done well for the team, always takes pride in playing for the country. He was not really happy with getting hit in the first innings, which is not in his control.”
Rahul has earned five Test caps since making his debut in December 2014. In the course of this he has scored 256 runs, including two centuries. Rahul’s last Test, against Sri Lanka in September 2015, was not a particularly memorable one personally, with him making 2 and 2, being bowled twice after misjudging the line and length and leaving the ball alone.
