Kohli becomes third India captain to register ton in West Indies

India dominated the opening day of the first Test of the series against West Indies to be comfortably placed at 302 for 4. It was captain Virat Kohli who led from the front, scoring his 12th Test hundred. He was supported by opener Shikhar Dhawan, who scored a well-paced 84. Leg spinner Devendra Bishoo was the chief wicket-taker for West Indies, taking three, but the day belonged to Kohli who kept rewriting record books.

Statistical highlights of day one of the first Test:

210 Total caps for West Indies in this Test - their least-experienced side against India at home in 31 Tests, since 204 caps in the fourth Test of the 1971 series in Bridgetown.

5 Consecutive tosses won by Virat Kohli in Tests. The record for India is six by Mohammad Azharuddin, Nari Contractor and MS Dhoni.

11.28 Batting average of Murali Vijay in seven innings in West Indies. He has scored 79 runs in four Tests with a highest of 45. It is the least he averages in any country.

9 Innings since India registered a fifty-plus stand for the first wicket in West Indies. The highest in this period is 26. However, the four partnerships before this streak started read 72, 159, 61 and 109.

19 Virat Kohli became the 19th Indian player to reach the milestone of 3000 runs in Test cricket. The 73 innings he took to reach the landmark is the sixth fewest by an Indian.

84 runs by Shikhar Dhawan is the second highest by a left-handed batsman for India in Tests in West Indies, after Salim Durrani's 104 at Port of Spain in 1962. He is only the third left-handed opening batsman for India to play in West Indies after Nari Contractor and Abhinav Mukund.

4 Players who have scored more runs than Dhawan (84) in their first innings in West Indies. The batsmen are Polly Umrigar (130), Brijesh Patel (115*), Sanjay Manjrekar (108) and Ajay Jadeja (96).

105 run stand by Dhawan and Kohli is the first century partnership for the third wicket in Tests played in North Sound, Antigua. The previous highest was 90 by Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor in 2012.

3 Century partnerships for Dhawan and Kohli for the third wicket in five innings together. The partnerships read 126, 51, 227, 45 and 105. Their average partnership of 110.80 is only behind 145.25 between Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli (minimum 500 runs) for India.

3 Indian captains scoring hundreds in West Indies, Kohli being the third. Rahul Dravid (146 in St. Lucia in 2006) and Kapil Dev (100* in Port of Spain in 1983) are the other two. Kohli is the first Indian captain to score fifty or more in his first innings as captain in West Indies. The previous highest was 49 by Rahul Dravid in St. John's in 2006.

134 Balls taken by Kohli to reach his hundred is the second fastest for him in Tests, after his 129-ball century against New Zealand at Wellington.

0.50 Kohli's conversion rate to hundreds - 12 hundreds out of 24 fifty-plus scores. Among Indians with at least 10 centuries, only Mohammad Azharuddin (0.51) has a better conversion rate - 22 hundreds to 21 fifties.

2 Captains scoring a century in North Sound in Tests. The only captain to do it before Kohli was Ramnaresh Sarwan, who scored 128 against Australia in 2008. Kohli's 143* is the second highest individual score in North Sound after Chris Gayle's 150 against New Zealand in 2012.

143* scored by Kohli is the most runs for India on the first day of a series in West Indies. He surpassed Shikhar Dhawan (84), Suresh Raina (82 in Kingston, 2011) and Dilip Sardesai (81 in Kingston, 1971).

9 Captains scoring 1000-plus runs for India in Tests. Eighteen innings taken by Kohli to reach the landmark is the joint second-fewest in terms of innings with MS Dhoni, only behind Sunil Gavaskar's 14.

302 runs scored by India is the most runs they scored in the first day of a series in the West Indies. The previous highest was 246 in Kingston in 2011. It is the third-most runs they scored in a day's play in West Indies after 361 in St. Lucia and 306 in St. John's, both in 2006.
