India's Roads Will Soon Have 3D Painted Speed Breakers To Slow Down Motorists
The government would soon allow three dimensional paintings of fake speed breakers on highways and urban roads to tame speeding drivers. The paintings appear as 3D barriers to oncoming motorists, although the road is completely flat.
Sources said highways minister Nitin Gadkari has asked the engineering wing to introduce them "to change the mindset" of road users. Similarly, urban development minister M Venkaiah Naidu has referred this 3D illusion of speed bumps to NHAI.
This painting had gone viral recently after two artists painted them on Ahmedabad roads. Drivers see these and tend to slow down as they look like raised protrusions. Speeding has been the biggest reason behind road fatalities claiming 49,000 lives in 2014.
In 2008, such fake speed bumps were installed for the first time at 100 junctions in the US. There were also debates whether such fake speed bumps may lead to hazardous driving behaviour even at real speed bumps. Officials said while any such innovative idea can be experimented, they need to study the impact before making it a practice. "We may also need to specify where all such paintings be allowed to avoid people suddenly braking and crashing in to other vehicles," said an engineer.
Road safety expert Rohit Baluja said, "Everything which is installed on a roadway must ensure that these don't create any alternate hazards."
