2006 World Cupper Garcia named Atletico Kolkata marquee player

Indian Super League Kolkata franchise, Atletico de Kolkata today unveiled UEFA Champions League winner Spaniard Luis Garcia as their marquee player in the first such announcement of the much-anticipated tournament here today.

36-year-old attacking midfielder Garcia earned 20 caps for Spain between 2005 and 2008 and was part of the 2006 World Cup team. He was instrumental in Liverpool's UEFA Champions League triumph in 2004-05.

Garcia had scored winning goals in the quarterfinal and semifinal against Juventus and Chelsea respectively in that Champions League triumph and made headlines for scoring a controversial goal in the fourth minute, dubbed a 'ghost goal' by then Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho.

"I'm really looking forward to the venture. I hope to bring a bagful of experience and skills to India," Garcia, a product of the Barcelona youth system, said in a video message.

Garcia played for Atletico Madrid for around three years in two stints and announced retirement early this year.

The ISL Kolkata franchise also formally announced Antoniao Lopez Habas as their marquee manager and his two assistants -- Miguel Angel and popular former Mohun Bagan forward Jose Ramirez Barreto.

The ceremonial launch of the team by West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee at Nabanna, the state secretariat, also saw the team's five co-owners unveil its team jersey and logo, which sported the unmistakable red-white stripes of its Spanish partners Atletico Madrid with a 'flying' royal Bengal tiger and five stars.

Sachin Tendulkar Launches Indian Super League in Glitzy Ceremony

The national team may be struggling to get funds to play in the Asian Games next month but Indian football found itself in 'glitzy hands' on Thursday. The Indian Super League - a tournament which promises to change the face of the sport in the country - was launched in a star-studded ceremony in Mumbai amid much fanfare. With legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, Bollywood actors Ranbir Kapoor, John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan, corporate honchos and several All Indian Football Federation officials in attendance, the risk of the national team facing a cash-crunch appeared a distant blemish under the flashy spotlights.

Scheduled to start from October 12, ISL was officially launched by Nita Ambani in the presence of Tendulkar and other co-owners of the eight franchises from around the country.Tendulkar, who co-owns a team called Kerala Blasters in the league, hailed the initiative as well. "Sports teaches you to get back on your feet and compete in the right spirit," he said. "We will compete hard but will continue to be friends off the field."

Taking a cue from Indian Premier League and United States' Major League Soccer, ISL will bring together foreign stars with Indian players in what promises to be a gala event. Ironically though, while league football in the country has received a major shot in the arm through ISL, it may be a completely different 'ball game' in the international arena.

After losing the second and last of its friendlies to rivals Pakistan recently, the national team is at the risk of depending solely on AIFF funding for Asian Games - scheduled to be held between September 9 and October 4.

"The talks are at a very preliminary stage. We can't take an arbitrary decision and there will be meetings," Jiji Thomson, the director general of the Sports Authority of India, was quoted as saying earlier this week.

India, twice Asian Games champions in 1951 and 1962, are ranked 150th in the world and will find it tough to advance in Incheon, where they are in Group G with the United Arab Emirates and Jordan.

Come on India, let’s Football!

Five channels to broadcast ISL

Football has always accused super-rich cricket of scuttling its growth in India but early this week something strange happened: football was stepping on cricket's toes.

Organizers of the Indian Super League (ISL) quite unusually chose cricket -- T20 international between England and India on Sunday — as the platform to release their promo for the season and heralding its cause was Sourav Ganguly and Harsha Bhogle, crickets leading voices.

That the broadcast happened on Star, partners in the ISL, was only incidental.

The 100-second promo or television commercial, C'mon India, Let's Football, was first beamed prior to the start of the T20 international, then repeated during the innings break and finally another broadcast at the end of the match. It was a coup of sorts and since then, as almost 35 channels beamed the first promo, the idea of an Indian Super League is suddenly catching on.

"The panoramic 100 second film captures the hopes of 1.2 billion people to live their dream of building a footballing nation. The first television commercial sparks the start of the league's lead up to a 36-day, 360 degree launch marketing campaign," IMG-Reliance, organizers of the league, said in a statement on Thursday.

According to sources, while the advertising blitz will continue till the start of the league on October 12 with heavy presence on social media, the tournament itself is expected to be broadcast on five channels: Star Sports 1, Star Sports 3, Star Sports HD, Jalsa and Asianet.

The newly launched commercial urges Indians to be part of the league, and although a section of the fans have wondered why serious footballers are missing out from the promo, organizers said there is more to come.

"The second commercial should be out latest by the end of this month and will involve most of the marquee players," said one official.

Organizers said the first commercial captures the spirit of hundreds of millions of fans across India.

"Be it the fishermen of Kerala, the dancers from Rajasthan, or the monks in the northeast, everybody is gripped with football fever. The combined effort, passion and power of Indian fans eventually takes shape of a unique and panoramic human stadium. The film ends with hope in the eyes of young kids as the sky fills with raining footballs. This film signifies the birth of a billion hopes and dreams for a future in football," said the statement.

STAR India to air Hero
Indian Super League in 5
languages

The inaugural season of the IMG Reliance- and STAR India promoted Hero Indian Super
League (ISL) will be aired in five languages, the most for any sport tournament in India. The
league is a football tournament.

The broadcaster will use its sports channels for the Hindi and English feed. Its regional channels
will be used to provide feed in Bengali,Kannada and Malayalam.
STAR India operates six sport channels, four in standard-definition visual feed and two in high.

The English feed will be available on STAR Sports 2 and Sports HD in standard and high definition, respectively. The rest in standard
definition.

The tournament will be telecast in
Hindi on STAR Sports 3 (a sports channel for Hindi feed), Gold and Utsav.

The network operates Bengali channels STAR Jalsha and Jalsha Movies; the latter will be used
to air the tournament’s Bengali feed. For Kannada and Malayalam, STAR India has the Asianet bouquet, which has five Malayalam
channels and two Kannada ones. Asianet Movies will be used to air the Malayalam feed.

Asianet Suvarna Plus for the Kannada feed. STAR India Chief Executive Uday Shankar and
Chief Operating Officer Sanjay Gupta had said the network was committed to developing a
multi-sport environment in the country and providing multilingual feed for this. Last year,
the network telecast Barclay’s Premier League (the football league in England) in English and
Hindi for digital cable and direct-to-home subscribers.
