STAR, Sony, Zee, Colors & Other Indian Pay TV Channels Are Available Free On The Internet - Allegedly Pirated

Internet has opened a world of communication and rapid exchange of communication and data. However, the absence of a regulatory framework has often led to it being used for distribution of pirated content, causing revenue losses. According to reports, several Indian pay TV channels, including those from Star, Sony & Zee are available for free viewing.

STREAMING TV WEBSITES
Several thousand TV channels are available from around the world, for free viewing on the internet.
Web viewing of TV channels is enabled either by websites that stream the content, or viewer software (e.g. Readon Viewer) that provides a user friendly interface, compiling streaming TV channels from around the world, in practically every content genre.

INDIAN TV CONTENT
Broadcasting industry estimates from India suggest that more than 100 Asian channels are being illegally streamed through websites in the US market alone to over 100,000 South Asian households. Industry estimates indicated that more than 100 channels are illegally streamed to over 10,000 households in the UK market. The number increases every time a cricket match is on. Star, Sony and Zee are among the popular channels in demand abroad.
A viewer could watch streaming content anywhere in the world on the laptop or desktop using broadband connectivity with a nominal subscription to hacker or web owner.

INDIAN PAY CHANNELS - FREE
Recent press reports indicate that a number of site such currently offer Indian TV channels, for free. Reliable IPTV (www.reliableiptv.com) a USbased IPTV firm; www.mast.tv and www.idesitv.com and others are just a few of the site that offer Indian content. Some of these are pay sites while there are several which allegedly pirate Indian pay channels and offer them free.

PIRACY METHODS
Some sites simply hack IP addresses, while others steal the original content and relay it on their website.
To combat these pirates, it is necessary to locate the pirates' streaming server location then take down hosting server on a sustained basis. The latter is extremely difficult since a pirate website can easily launch a new portal after redirecting original DNS and name server.

ANTI PIRACY EFFORTS
An independent study done by KLipcorp IP, an anti-piracy protection services firm, which specialises in the removal of videobased pirate feeds, identified 94 instances of piracy for Asia TV during a 5-day anti-piracy trial period in April 2012. During this trial period, KLipcorp took down 50% of the pirate streams. Registered in the UK, Asia TV distributes television content in markets such as Europe, Russia, South Africa and the UK.
According to the study by the anti-piracy company, there were 7 advertisers located on 13 occasions supporting pirate streams.

$1 BILLION LOSS
According to CASBAA, the Asian pay-TV industry looses $970 million a year in piracy. Piracy creates avenues to generate illegal funds for crime syndicates, which, in turn, could even be linked to terror groups.
Most Indian broadcasters have created strong anti-piracy departments, whose primary task is to track down and curb piracy, but the battle is far from won, for the pay TV channels. n
