Surgical strike against Pakistan: India has right to respond to attack on sovereignty, says Bangladesh

India has “all legal and globally accepted right” to respond to any attack on her sovereignty and territory, Bangladesh said today after Indian Army carried out surgical strikes against terror bases across the LoC but called for “restraint” from all sides. “India has got all legal, internationally accepted right to make a response to any attack on her sovereignty and her soil,” Iqbal Chowdhury, Advisor to Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said. Commenting on the Kashmir issue, he said it is a “bilateral dispute” and there has been a “violation from the other side”.

“It (Kashmir issue) has been a long, continued dispute and there has been a… Violation from the other side and Bangladesh always believes that any aggression or attack on the sovereignty of the independence and legal right of a country is not acceptable and Bangladesh always feels that any country must honour and respect the sovereignty of a third country,” he said. Chowdhury said after Bangladesh premier Hasina came to power, she had asserted that Bangladeshi soil will not be allowed to house any terrorist group and to plan or organise any attack or activity on the Indian side, and has been “very committed on this point that (there is) zero tolerance to any (such) type of activity.” “…I think that the Indian government and the people have all the right to rebuff and to combat any type of aggression from any quarter whether it is from a neighbouring country,” he told an Indian TV channel over phone.

He, however, appealed for “restraint” from all sides for a peaceful neighbourhood. “Bangladesh always feels that in these type of things, there should be restraint from all sides because we believe that in the SAARC countries, we need to live in a peaceful environment, honouring the sovereign rights of each member country,” he added. His comments came after India carried out ‘surgical strikes’ on terror launch pads across the Line of Control(LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir last night, inflicting “significant casualties” on terrorists and those who are trying to support them.

Surgical strike in Pakistan: Complete statement of Indian Army on today’s operation across LoC targeting terrorists in PoK

The Indian Army today struck back at Pakistan-based terror outfits camps located at seven different locations and killed somewhere between 35-40 terrorists and their supporters. The Indian Army described it as a “surgical strikes” destroying terrorist launch-pads inside Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) some 2-3 kilometers away from Line of Control (LoC). Lieutenant General Ranbir Singh, India’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO), said the strikes, which took place today caused “significant damage” but offered no further details. But on the other side if media reports are to be believed, than some suggest that around 35-40 terrorists were killed in today’s operation carried out by para-commandos. During the operation, the para-commandos were para-dropped at the terror sites who managed to destroy around seven launch pads used by terrorists to conduct strikes in India.

According to military textbooks, a “surgical strike” refers to an attack that causes damage to its target, not to a mode of assault. On the other hand, Pakistan claimed that two of its soldiers were killed when troops “exchanged fire across the Line of Control”. General Singh’s statement left open with the possibility that India may have used artillery or anti-tank missiles to target terrorists launching positions without risking troops in a mission across the Line of Control.

This is what the Lt General Ranbir Singh said today:

It has been a matter of serious concern that there has been continuing and increasing infiltration by terrorists across Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. This is reflected, amongst others, in the terrorist attacks on 11 and 18 September in Poonch and Uri respectively. Almost 20 infiltration attempts have also been foiled by the Army at or close to the Line of Control during this year.

During these terrorist attacks and infiltration attempts, we have recovered various stores including GPS and items that clearly indicate their origins in Pakistan. Furthermore, captured terrorists hailing from Pakistan or Pakistan Occupied Kashmir have confessed to their training and arming in Pakistan or territory under its control. The matter had been taken up at highest diplomatic levels and through military channels. India has also offered consular access to these apprehended terrorists for Pakistan to verify their confessions. Furthermore, we had proposed that fingerprints and DNA samples of terrorists killed in Poonch and Uri could be made available to Pakistan for investigation.

Despite our persistent urging that Pakistan respect its January 2004 commitment for not allowing its soil or territory under its control to be used for terrorism against India, there has been no let up in infiltration and terrorist actions from across the Line of Control. If damage was limited, this was primarily due to the efforts of our soldiers deployed in our multi-tiered counter-infiltration grid that has been effective in neutralizing infiltrating terrorists. The Indian Armed Forces have been extremely vigilant in the face of this continuing threat.

Based on receiving specific and credible inputs that some terrorist teams had positioned themselves at launchpads along Line of Control to carry out infiltration and conduct terrorist strikes inside Jammu and Kashmir and in various metros in other states, the Indian Army conducted surgical strikes at several of these launchpads to pre-empt infiltration by terrorists. The operations were focused on ensuring that these terrorists do not succeed in their design to cause destruction and endanger the lives of our citizens.

During these counter-terrorist operations, significant casualties were caused to terrorists and those providing support to them. The operations aimed at neutralizing terrorists have since ceased. We do not have any plans for further continuation. However, the Indian Armed Forces are fully prepared for any contingency that may arise.

I have been in touch with Pakistan Army DGMO and have informed him of our actions. It is India’s intention to maintain peace and tranquility in the region. But we cannot allow the terrorists to operate across the Line of Control with impunity and attack citizens of our country at will. In line with Pakistan’s commitment in January 2004 not to allow its soil and territory under its control to be used for attacks against India, we expect the Pakistani army to cooperate with us to erase the menace of terrorism from the region.

Surgical strikes: NC leader Mustafa Kamal claims India violated Pak’s sovereignty

Mustafa Kamal, a leader of the
opposition National Conference
party in Jammu and Kashmir on
Thursday said India has violated the
sovereignty of Pakistan by allowing
the army to conduct surgical strikes
across the Line of Control. (LoC)
“The Director General of Military
Operations (DGMO) of our country
has given a Press Conference in
which he has said the Indian Army
has carried out surgical strikes
across the (Line of Control) LoC.
Reportedly, on militant training
camps along the LoC in which a
large number of militants.. At the
outset, this aggression, not to give
it a sweeter word of saying
‘surgical strike’, they have violated
the sovereignty of Pakistan, under
whose administrative control the
other side is, the PoK (Pakistan
Occupied Kashmir) is,” Kamal said.
Lt. Gen. Ranbir Singh, Director
General of Military Operations
(DGMO) announced that the Indian
Army conducted surgical strikes on
seven terrorist launch pads across
the Line of Control (LoC), in the
wake of the infiltration bids by
terrorists along the Line of Control
(LoC), including at Uri and Poonch
earlier this month.
Lt. Gen. Singh said that the
operation of the Indian Army was
basically focussed to ensure that
the terrorists do not succeed in
their design of infiltration and carry
out destruction endangering the
lives of citizens of the nation.
“This has the potential of a full
scale war between the two, which
will be very unfortunate, not only
for us here in Jammu and Kashmir,
for the country India, and the
country Pakistan. I am sure the
countries of the world, especially
the power blocks, they will
definitely have something to say
on this issue,” Kamal added.
