Shaun Marsh to replace injured
Clarke for Brisbane Test

Shaun Marsh will replace injured
captain Michael Clarke in the
Australian team for next week's
second Brisbane Test against India,
Cricket Australia said on Saturday.

Clarke said scans have shown he has
a torn right hamstring after coming
off during the final day of the
opening Adelaide Test and will take
no further part in the series against
India. Wicketkeeper Brad Haddin is
expected to assume the Test
captaincy for the remaining three
Tests.

Australia called up West Australian
batsman Marsh and also added left-
arm paceman Mitchell Starc to their
squad for the Gabba Test.

Lehmann hints at a few
changes for second Test

With the presence
of Hazlewood and Starc in the
squad, Siddle faces exclusion after
a poor Brisbane outing.

Not just Michael Clarke , the
Australian team may be forced to
make more changes for the
second Test against India starting
Wednesday at Brisbane, said
coach Darren Lehmann a day after
the team's 48-run win against
India at the Adelaide Oval on
Saturday. Australia captain Clarke,
having already suffered a back
injury while batting on day one,
injured his hamstring while
fielding on day five and left the
field, only to inform later that his
injuries might just put an end to
his career.

With Clarke out of the picture,
left-handed batsman Shaun Marsh ,
who along with fast
bowler Mitchell Starc was added to
the squad late on Saturday, is the
favourite to play his first Test
since February earlier this year
against South Africa. However,
Lehmann hinted that Marsh may
not be the only new face for the
Brisbane encounter.

"Might need to, we'll have to see
how they all pull up," Lehmann
said when asked whether some
bowlers needed to be rested after
a gruelling first game.

"If they are 100 per cent [fit] they
play. A couple of them are a little
bit sore but in the next day or
two we'll know. It's a quick
turnaround."

Fast bowler Peter Siddle had an
unsatisfactory outing in the first
game with just two wickets in 27.4
overs. He also seemed to be a few
yards slower, bringing Lehmann to
shed more light on the bowler's
status in view of Starc's inclusion
and upcoming fast bowler Josh
Hazlewood 's presence in the
squad.

"[Siddle was] a little bit unwell in
the first innings, [and did not
bowl a lot in India's] second
innings, but that's the nature of
the game sometimes," Lehmann
said.

"He bowled tightly and that's
what we need from him.
Obviously we need [him] to get
some more wickets if we possibly
can.

"He knows that but he's working
and doing everything he can
behind the scenes."

Out-of-form opener Chris Rogers,
with innings of 9 and 21 at
Adelaide, was another player who
was under scrutiny, confirmed
Lehmann. "He [Rogers] is a great
foil for David Warner, and we love
that as a selection panel.

"But like everyone you need to
make some runs.

"He knows he needs to make
some runs there's no hiding from
the fact but he's put on some
really good partnerships in the
last 18 months and been a great
foil behind the scenes - a lot of
things you guys [media] don't see.

"So we're really pleased with
where he's at, [but] we'd
obviously like him to make some
more runs."

On Clarke being doubtful for the
upcoming World Cup, Lehmann
said, "He [Clarke] knows he needs
to be fully fit for one-day cricket.

He was magnificent in this [first]
Test and he's been magnificent
the last few weeks. But he needs
to get it [his fitness] right - we
know that, he knows that. One-
day cricket is an explosive game
and we need guys fully fit."

Steven Smith to lead Australia
in Clarke's absence

Steveb Smith has
replaced injured skipper Michael
Clarke for the rest of the series
against India.

Brisbane : Steven Smith will
captain Australia in the absence
of Michael Clarke , who hobbled off
the field on the fifth day in
Adelaide, and after returning from
hospital commented that his
future as a Test cricketer was in
doubt. Cricket Australia
announced Smith's elevation to
the captaincy for the remaining
three Test matches against India
at the Gabba on Monday,
meaning the 25-year-old will
become his country's 45th captain
in the format when he leads the
hosts out at the venue in two
day's time.

"These are difficult circumstances
given Michael's injury and the fact
that we don't know how long he
will be out of the game," said
national selector Rod Marsh.

"What we do know is that it won't
be an overnight fix so after a lot
of thought we have taken the
opportunity to appoint an
emerging young leader as captain
until such time as Michael regains
fitness and returns to the side.

"We congratulate Steve on the
wonderful honour of leading his
country. On Wednesday he will
become Australia's 45th Test
captain and at the age of 25 will
become one of our youngest
leaders."

Smith has been viewed as the
long-term successor to 33-year-
old Clarke and has officially been
installed as vice-captain, replacing
Brad Haddin, 37. "Brad Haddin
has done an exceptional job as
vice-captain since assuming the
role last year and will provide
strong support to Steve just as he
has done for Michael," said
Marsh. "There was a strong
argument for Brad to assume the
captaincy until Michael returns,
but given we don't know how long
that will be, we felt the time was
right to take a longer-term view
and give a young player this
chance."

Smith's ascendancy to being the
bedrock of this Australian team's
middle order has been swift.

Since he returned to the Test
team for the tour of India in early
2013, with the selectors clearly
looking at the summer Ashes to
follow, he has scored 1490 runs at
an average of 51.37 Since August
2013 he has scored centuries at
The Oval, Perth, Sydney,
Centurion and now at Adelaide
Oval. This year he has 779 runs in
13 innings, average of 77.90, with
three hundreds and four fifties.

Unbeaten innings of 162 and 52 in
the win over India in the first Test
were further evidence that Smith
is the next big thing in Australian
cricket, with claims of his
captaincy credentials being
enhanced match by match.

Josh Hazlewood to debut; Shaun
Marsh and Mitchell Starc included
for Brisbane Test

Stand-in skipper, Steve Smith
announced that there will be three
changes in the Australian eleven for
the second Test against India at the
Gabba, which starts on December
17th. Apart from Michael Clarke, who
will miss the remainder of the series
with a hamstring injury, Ryan Harris
will also miss the game as he is
suffering a slight strain in his
quadriceps. Peter Siddle, who was
lack-lustre in the opening Test in
Adelaide, has been dropped.
Pacer, Josh Hazlewood will be making
his Test debut while left-arm quick,
Mitchell Starc, whose last game was
in Abu Dhabi against Pakistan, has
been recalled to the eleven. Shaun
Marsh is the other change in the
eleven, as he comes in place of
Clarke. Smith also mentioned that he
will move up to No. 4 while Shaun
will bat at No. 5.

While he is hopeful that Harris will
be fit for the Boxing Day Test in
Melbourne, Smith said the selectors
could not risk playing the pacer in
Brisbane. "Ryan Harris pulled up a
little bit stiff and sore from Adelaide.

He's got a slight quad strain. Darren
Lehmann has always said if our
bowlers aren't 100% fit going into the
match we won't be playing them. It's
very unfortunate for Ryan but
hopefully he gets his body right
soon."

"I think he'll be okay in a couple of
days. It's just going into a Test match
if you're not 100% fit that's the way
it goes with this team. Hopefully he
gets a bit of work done with the
physios in the next couple of days
and can start running and hopefully
he'll be fine for Melbourne," he
added.

Smith said Starc deserved a place in
the eleven while he said it was
disappointing to leave out Siddle. "In
regards to the inclusion of Mitchell
Starc, I think we just wanted to play
a bowler with a bit of extra pace and
bounce. Mitchell went back and
bowled really well for New South
Wales in the last couple of Shield
games and deserves his spot."

"It's obviously very disappointing for
Peter Siddle, who's been a terrific
bowler over a long period of time.
He's certainly not out of the loop.
He's still in and around the team and
hopefully he'll get another game
soon," Smith said.

The 23-year-old Hazlewood, who has
been part of the Test squad on
several occasions earlier, has finally
earned his maiden Test cap and
Smith said he is impressed with the
way the youngster has been
performing in the domestic circuit.

"It's very exciting, I've watched Josh
very closely over the last couple of
years at New South Wales and he
impresses me every time. He's only
getting better and better. This pitch
out here is going to suit him
perfectly. He's very skilful for his
age, and I'm just looking forward to
seeing him zing a few through and
bowl with that extra pace and get
that extra bit of bounce as well."

"I think that's part of the reason
Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood
have been included in the team. It's
traditionally quite a fast and bouncy
wicket and it looks no different out
there for this Test match. Hopefully
after the wickets we've played on
recently in Test cricket, the Adelaide
Oval and the two in the UAE, it's
exciting for our fast bowlers to finally
have something that's going to have
a bit of liveliness to it," he added.

Regarding the change in the batting
positions, the Australian skipper said:
"I've had a chat to a couple of the
senior players and the coach about
it. I just thought taking over the
captaincy and a bit of extra
responsibility that I'd step up to
No.4 and get the job done there. I
don't think there's a big difference
between batting 4 and 5, so that's
just the way I've gone with it."

Australia XI: David Warner, Chris
Rogers, Shane Watson, Steven Smith
(capt), Shaun Marsh, Mitchell Marsh,
Brad Haddin (wk), Mitchell Johnson,
Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh
Hazlewood.

Mitchell Marsh suffers
hamstring injury in second Test

Brisbane : Australia 's injury woes
continued with Mitchell Marsh
limping off the field with a
hamstring injury just after the
second session of the first day of
the second Test againstIndia in
Brisbane.

Marsh took his first Test wicket
when he had Shikhar Dhawan
caught behind for 24. However, in
his first over after lunch, he
pulled up after bowling the 27th
over of the innings.

Cricket Australia confirmed that
Marsh had soreness on his right
hamstring and they are
monitoring his progress closely.

This injury is another in a string
of hamstring related injuries for
Marsh junior. He underwent
surgery on his left hamstring in
2012 while another injury on his
left hamstring resulted in him
missing the ODI series against
Pakistan in the UAE in October.

Michael Clarke , who will miss the
entire series due to a hamstring
injury, tweeted about Marsh's
injury and also updated his
current status. Clarke hobbled off
the field in Adelaide and scans
revealed a tear, which resulted in
his surgery. This injury also puts
Clarke's World Cup participation
in doubt.
