My honest opinion.
Dhoni's style is always to take the game deep. Earlier it used to work every single time, because even though he takes so many balls to score the initial runs, he had the ability to cover it up in the end with his big hitting ability. But now, he seems to have lost that ability. I think It's better he changes his approach and follow a hit-out or get-out method, he did this in IPL 2018 and it paid off well. But again T20s are different, in ODIs it may or may not work. For example, if he started the big hitting in the first ODI when the scorecard was reading 4-3 and got out cheaply and the score reads 20-4, I'm sure India would have been bundled out below 150. So he might have been right in playing too slow in that situation. But, whether or not he would have covered up the strike rate had he not been given out wrongly is another point. He might or might not have, we will never know.
And about WC, I think it's too late to drop him from the squad. If they had to drop him, they should have done it at least before an year. And also there's no other wicket keeper equivalent to him right now except Saha (Not available). And Dhoni's experience in playing in big tournaments will come in handy at some point in the World Cup! For now, there's no option, but he needs to hang up his boots after World Cup, and knowing Dhoni he'll be doing that himself!!
Just another point, Even if you take Rohit Sharma, he starts at snail pace, but he has this tremendous six hitting skill which enables him to cover up the strike rate at the end. He's following this approach for almost an year now and has been tremendously successful in white ball cricket, especially ODIs.
