A total of 31 matches will be played in the ICC Women's World Cup, 2017 which will begin on June 24, while the final is scheduled for July 23 at Lord's, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Sunday (February 5). The complete match schedule will be announced on March 8, 15 days after the completion of the ICC Women's World Cup Qualifiers, the cricket governing body added.
Eight teams will face off against each other once, totalling to 28 round-robin matches spread over 21 days, which will be played in Bristol, Derby, Leicester and Taunton. The top four teams will qualify for the semi-finals which will be played at Bristol on July 18 and in Derby on July 20.
Australia, England, New Zealand and West Indies, who finished in the top four of the ICC Women's Championship, earned an automatic qualification for the world event. The remaining four spots will be decided following the qualifying tournament, which will commence from February 7 in Colombo.
India, South Africa, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Zimbabwe, Thailand, Bangladesh, Scotland and Papua New Guinea are the teams that will participate in the qualifier. The ten teams then will be divided into two groups and the top three teams from each group will qualify for the Super Six stage, in which each side will play three matches against teams from the other group. The top two teams from each group in the Super Six stage will progress to the World Cup to be held in June.
"Preparations are now well underway for this summer's tournament which we hope will push new boundaries for the women's game. We have worked hard with the venues to put together a schedule that best meets the needs of the players, fans and broadcasters," Steve Elworthy, Tournament Director of the ICC Women's World Cup, said.
"Confirming the start date as Saturday (24 June), means we have an additional weekend of cricket and it promises to be an exciting opening weekend for everyone involved," added the former South Africa cricketer, who is also the managing director of the 2019 World Cup to be held in England and Wales.
