Prithvi Shaw to lead India in Under-19 World Cup

Mumbai batsman Prithvi Shaw will lead India at the Under-19 World Cup to be held in New Zealand from January 13. Punjab's Shubman Gill, who was the top scorer in the Youth ODI series in England earlier this year at an average of 92.66, has been named as Shaw's deputy. The 15-member squad also includes Haryana's Himanshu Rana and Assam's Riyan Parag along with five stand-by players, all of whom are set to participate in a preparatory camp in Bengaluru from December 8 to 22.

Seven of the 15 players in the squad have experience of playing Ranji Trophy. Shaw, who is Mumbai's second-highest scorer this season with 521 runs at 57.88, and Bengal's Ishan Porel, who has bagged 10 wickets in two matches have been permitted to play for their respective sides in the quarter-finals starting December 7, and will join the camp on December 12.

India have won the Under-19 title thrice, a record they hold together with Australia. They made the final of the previous edition in Bangladesh but lost to West Indies by five wickets.

Squad: Prithvi Shaw (capt), Shubman Gill (vice-capt), Manjot Kalra, Himanshu Rana, Abhishek Sharma, Riyan Parag, Aryan Juyal, Harvik Desai, Shivam Mavi, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Ishan Porel, Arshdeep Singh, Anukul Roy, Shiva Singh, Pankaj Yadav

Standby players: Om Bhosle, Rahul Chahar, Ninad Rathva, Urvil Patel, Aditya Thaka

Virat Kohli Gives Pep Talk to U-19 Team, Terms Prithvi Shaw 'Special Talent'

Virat Kohli knows how to win an U-19 World Cup. So it came as little surprise when U-19 coach Rahul Dravid wanted the Indian skipper to have a small session with Prithvi Shaw and his U-19 team ahead of their departure for the World Cup. Not that Kohli is not aware about teenage prodigy Prithvi's exploits in first-class cricket where he has already scored five hundreds.

"I am also excited about Prithvi (Shaw). I have heard a lot about him and Ravi Bhai (Shashtri) has also told me many things about him. He has had a lot of good performances in first-class cricket, which is rarely seen. He has been made the captain ahead of the boys, who have played U-19, there is special ability in him, that we have seen," Kohli told reporters in the pre-departure press conference ahead of the tour of South Africa.

BCCI tweeted a couple of pictures from their official handle where Kohli spoke at length with the young team and captioned the image as, "Just the kind of boost the young India U19 team needed before their departure for the World Cup. India captain @imVkohli spent some time with them and there was sure a lot to take for the youngsters."

Both India senior and U-19s will be travelling to their respective destinations in the same flight via Dubai. "Yes I will be meeting them (U-19 boys) after my press conference. Rahul bhai spoke to me and said that I should talk to them before leaving," said Kohli before meeting the boys.
