Industry body Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has written to the telecom department and over-the-top (OTT) companies such as Netflix, Hotstar, Voot, and Amazon Prime Video to lower the streaming resolution to reduce the burden on the networks in the wake of people staying at home due to the coronavirus outbreak.

COAI asks Netflix, Hotstar, other OTTs to lower streaming quality to reduce internet overload
As expected they took the stupid route. Should have asked companies like TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, Twitter, PUBG etc. The services which are mostly used. How many Netflix users as compared to TikTok users?

And also YouTube, Voot, and Amazon Prime Video to lower the streaming resolution to reduce the burden on the networks in the wake of people staying at home due to the coronavirus outbreak.

“This sudden surge in digital use is already putting pressure on the network infrastructure of the Telecom Service Providers (TSPs). The TSPs are taking requisite steps to manage this load and facilitate the smooth functioning of the networks during this critical time,” COAI wrote.

The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has written to over-the-top (OTT) streaming platforms to ensure smooth video streaming across the country as people are staying indoors and taking to work-from-home amid the coronavirus crisis.

The COAI said that there are various measures that the streaming platform companies can undertake in the current situation to provide a suitable level of service to their customers at the most appropriate bitrate required.

One such measure is temporarily moving to SD (Standard Definition) rather than HD (High Definition) streaming, it said, adding that there may be other such technical measures that may be taken to ease the pressure on infrastructure.

They should disable 4K and 1080p, but they should definitely offer up to 720p. Forcing SD streaming is too regressive in today's age even in the current scenario.
They should just stick to Top tier cities if that is possible. In low tier cities Broadband penetration is too low. Like In odisha. Most people just watch TV. I mean salaried class. So there is no impact on wired line bandwidth.

One user posted that Hotstar quality dropping automatically from High to Low.
But Running as usual here in fire TV stick.

HD still consumes excessive bandwidth. Specially on non compressed format. That's why TikTok, Instagram etc. should also be asked to disable large files upload. As Noobs uploads videos in its original form.
