Hitachi's IT arm to double Hyderabad headcount

HYDERABAD: The T-issue not withstanding, Hyderabad continues to be a destination of choice for global IT players. And attesting to this fact is the decision of Hitachi Consulting, the IT and management consulting solutions arm of the $112 billion Hitachi Ltd, to more than double its global development centre in Hyderabad to 4,000 engineers from the existing 1,600 people over the next five years.

The Hyderabad ramp up is part of the company's plans to take up the total India headcount to 5,000 engineers from the existing 2,000 engineers. Apart from Hyderabad, the company also has GDCs in Pune and Bangalore that currently employ 300 and 100 engineers respectively .

"Hyderabad is our largest GDC, accounting for 80% of our total India GDC headcount, and all our global delivery requirements are fulfilled out of here," Sanjay Jesrani, executive vice-president , head-global delivery centre (India and China), Hitachi Consulting, told TOI here.

Jesrani saud Hitachi Consulting is adding another 2-3 lakh sq ft space to its existing 7-acre campus at Gachibowli, where it has a built area of 2 lakh sq ft, it is also exploring other locations like Uppal as part of its expansion plans.

"We hope to invest close to $20 million out of total India investment plan of $25 million in our Hyderabad GDC over the next few years," Jesrani said.

He said as a chunk of employment in Hyderabad is generated locally thanks to the availability of a huge talent pool of skilled manpower, most companies see IT as a growth industry and have shrugged off the hiccups caused by T-bandhs.
