Reliance Jio Infocomm created quite a stir in the market when it announced it is giving away free unlimited 4G data and voice services for the first three months along with its 4G SIM card. Rival telecom operators Idea and Airtel reacted by slashing their data tariffs for prepaid users by up to 67 per cent, with Vodafone likely to follow soon.
However, the Reliance Jio 4G SIM, which is a bit difficult to get hold of at this moment, comes with a clause. It seems Reliance wants to boost the sale of its LYF smartphones by offering a deal on its 4G SIM card – a deal that isn’t easy to resist.
Reliance is expected to commercially roll out its 4G services in August, and only those with a LYF smartphone will be able to use the services. This means users who already have a LYF smartphone or are willing to upgrade to one will be the ‘lucky ones’ to get hold of the Reliance Jio 4G SIM card.
However, recent reports claim Samsung has tied-up with Reliance, which will give top-end Samsung smartphone an access to Reliance 4G SIM. In fact, reports also claim Reliance 4G services will open up for more brands, including Apple iPhone. Reliance has not, however, made an official announcement backing the reports.
To further make it easier for users to upgrade, Reliance Jio announced price-cuts for a few of its LYF smartphones , with the cheapest 4G LYF phone costing as low as Rs 2,999. Now, we don’t know whether Reliance Jio will bring its 4G services to other brands for now, but here are some cheap 4G smartphone options, for when it does:
