The law and order situation, particularly crime against women, in Uttar Pradesh has turned from bad to worse in the Samajwadi Party regime. A day after a 14-year-old girl succumbed to burn injuries she suffered due to self-immolation following harassment by a youth, on Tuesday a school girl allegedly harassed by a local youth for a year hanged herself in her classroom in Sitapur.

The girl was a Class XII student and was being harassed by a youth from the same locality. The incident took place at the Arya Inter College within the Kotwali police station jurisdiction. According to police, a peon while locking the rooms after school got over spotted the girl hanging from the ceiling of her classroom. The principal of the college called the police and later the family was informed.

The girl's father alleged that a boy named Aman was harassing his daughter for the past one year. The boy would call her and stalk her, the father told the police and accused them of not paying heed to the family's complaints in the past.

Sitapur additional superintendent of police (ASP) BB Singh said that the police were probing the girl's death and that action would be initiated against the guilty. On Monday, a 14-year-old girl had died in Kanpur. She immolated herself on Saturday following harassment by a group of youths. A resident of Hanumanth Nagar, the girl was fed up of being stalked by the youth living in the neighbourhood.

Victim's relatives alleged that one Rohit alias Rinku were among the youth who regularly followed and harassed the girl, despite her ignoring them initially. On Saturday, however, Rohit along with the other youth waylaid her and threatened her of dire consequences if she did not return his advances.

On returning home, the girl is said to have locked herself up in a room and committed self-immolation after pouring kerosene. She was rushed to Lala Lajpat Rai hospital where she succumbed to her burns on Monday, the police said.

Rohit is said to have forcibly handed over a letter proclaiming his 'love' for the victim girl on July 2. He was arrested last month after the girl's family lodged a complaint in this regard with Naubasta police. However, Rohit continued to stalk the girl after his release. ""My daughter could not bear the threats and abuses,"" girl's mother said.

The incidents of rape and harassment of women are on the rise after SP government came to power in March this year.
