With the view to give users more control over the content they receive everyday in their inbox, Google has redesigned Gmail for both mobile and Web, and has done away with the single inbox. The new inbox groups your mails into categories which appear as different tabs.

These categories include Primary, Social, Promotions and Updates. There is a separate tab titled "Primary" for your important mails that you really want and can't afford to miss. Updates form social sites like Google+ and YouTube will appear in the social tab, and users can comment directly from the tab, without having to go to the social site to reply. Similarly, there are different tabs for promotions and offers, and updates, bills and receipts.

Users can customise the new inbox. They can select the tabs they want from all five to none, drag-and-drop to move messages between tabs, set certain senders to always appear in a particular tab and star messages so that they also appear in the Primary tab.

In the Gmail for Android 4.0+ and Gmail for iPhone and iPad apps, users will see Primary mail when they open the app and can easily navigate to the other tabs.

"We get a lot of different types of email: messages from friends, social notifications, deals and offers, confirmations and receipts, and more. All of these emails can compete for our attention and make it harder to focus on the things we need to get done. Sometimes it feels like our inboxes are controlling us, rather than the other way around," said Itamar Gilad, Product Manager, Google, in a blog post.

In case you don't like the concept of new inbox, Google allows you to switch off all optional tabs to go back to classic view, or switch to any of your other favorite inbox types.

Google is rolling out the new inbox gradually. The desktop, Android and iOS versions will become available within the next few weeks. But if you'd like to try out the new inbox on Desktop sooner, keep an eye on the gear menu and select Configure inbox when it appears in the Settings options.
