Even though millions of Android tablets are sold each year, and Chromebooks use many of the same applications through the Play Store, most of Google's apps are not optimized for large screens. Google Photos is one app that has always looked horrible on Android tablets, but that's finally changing.

Google appears to be testing an updated layout for large-screen devices in Google Photos. In both portrait and landscape orientations, the bottom tab bar is moved to the left side, with more controls than the simple three tabs (Photos, Search, and Library) visible on smartphones.

Google Photos is one of the most popular photo backup services out there. While free unlimited backup (ending soon) is probably the strongest pull, features like search and automatic albums definitely give it an edge over the others. Memories is another such blessing and it's found even more importance after last year's revamp that saw it being placed at the top of the app. The feature recently started focusing on your favorite people and things, and is now getting a new children-themed story titled "Out to play."

A new editor for your videos

With the new video editor, in addition to trimming, stabilizing and rotating your videos, you’ll now be able to crop, change perspective, add filters, apply granular edits (including brightness, contrast, saturation and warmth) and more.

There are now more than 30 controls, but a good place to start is with cropping and straightening the frame to focus more on the subject. And if the scene is poorly exposed, you can adjust the brightness to make your video shine.

Enhanced editing features for Google One members

Starting today, we’re bringing some of the editing features currently available on Pixel to Google One members as a part of their membership. These effects transform your portraits using machine learning: with Portrait Blur, you can blur the background post-snap, and with Portrait Light, you can improve the lighting on faces in portraits. Both features work for photos just taken or images from the past — even if the original image wasn’t taken in portrait mode.

Ever since digital cameras ousted film cameras, photo albums have almost become a thing of the past. What was previously mandatory to view your shots is an often-forgotten option now. Google Photos, however, is trying to offer a similar experience digitally with Memories. The feature, which recently showed people a photo collection of kids playing out in the sun, is now picking up new stories — "Sand and sea" and "Tasty treats."

Google is rolling out a storage management tool in the Photos app that will help you delete those photos and videos you’d rather not keep.

The new Google tool finds those photos and videos that count toward your quota but are more likely to be junk, such as blurry snapshots, screenshots, or particularly large videos.
