Google announced today that any changes you make in your search settings after logging to your account will now be saved to your account. The settings will be available on any logged-in web browser or computer. This means that choices like SafeSearch, Google Instant and languages don’t have to be made on every computer you use, even if they’re public.

The settings that can currently be saved are SafeSearch, Google Instant predictions, Results per page, opening results in a new window, blocking unwanted results and using web history for personalised results and recommendations.

Saving settings to your account is especially helpful if any of the following is true:
  • You use multiple computers or browsers
  • You share a computer with friends, family members, or co-workers who prefer to use distinct search settings
  • You use a private browsing mode (like incognito mode on Google Chrome) that clears cookies upon exit
  • You, or specific programs on your computer, frequently clear your browser’s cookies

To get saved search settings, regardless of which computer or browser you’re using, follow these steps:
  • Click the Sign in button in the top righthand corner of the search results page to sign in to your Google Account .
  • Click the gear icon in the top right corner of any search results page.
  • Select Search settings. (You can also visit the page directly at google.com/preferences.)
  • Customize your search settings.
  • Click the Save button at the bottom of the page to save your search settings to your account.
