Hi all,
I am using android 4.0.4 running phone. I am facing the problem with gmail. The latest version of gmail for android is not working on my phone. After updating to latest version of gmail, whenever I tried to open gmail on phone, it won't open and getting stopped. Even getting error google play stopped. Please help.

for android phone one of the biggest problem is what ever time they stop working with just single application updates from play store. to make sure there is no error there is only one way. go to application manager in settings then in 1st tab it self named downloaded application uninstall update of any system software this will bring back old version and then update back from play store to check if problem is solved or not. for you paths of step based process is

step 1: goto settings > application manager > downloaded application.
step 2: click gmail > uninstall updates.
(repeat steps for google play store & google play services)
note : as you says google play store also gives error. google play service is the main application for all google related application & play store updates of application.
step 3 : after restore back system application to default version open play store and go to setting and clicking build version of play store will update play store and services.
step 4 : update gmail from play store with latest version only when you have working play services latest version as new gmail will never work with old play services versions

most chances of latest version to work is nil as recently google announced v15 support library(android V4.0.3 & V4.0.4) as obsolete means no newer application may work. it's your call only to check if it works or does not. if it work it's good for you.

uninstall gmail and update with an older version APK.
