Aaron Finch named T20I captain for Sri Lanka series
Aaron Finch has been named Australia's captain for the three-match Twenty20 International series against Sri Lanka, set to start on February 17. His appointment was recommended by Cricket Australia's (CA) National Selection Panel (NSP) and endorsed by CA's Board of Directors.
The Melbourne Renegades captain has previously led Australia in six Twenty20 Internationals and was also in charge in Monday's One-Day International (ODI) against New Zealand in Auckland following an injury to Matthew Wade.
With the entire 16-member squad selected for the Test series against India unavailable for the T20I series at home, Finch will have to make do with virtually a second-string side. Among the big names who will be missing from the series include Steve Smith, David Warner, Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Starc.
"It's very exciting to be back and leading the side in Steve's absence," Finch said after his appointment on Tuesday (January 31). "It's been a rollercoaster from being captain leading up to the T20 WC (in 2016), being injured and then Steve taking over the reins for that tournament but it's something that, any time you get the chance to captain your country in any format, you're very chuffed about.
"We'll be missing some big names, some of the biggest in world cricket, but you can't dwell on that and it will be a fantastic opportunity for guys who've performed well in the KFC Big Bash League to push their case for further inclusion, and inclusion in the other formats too.
"There are some extraordinary players around the country that will now get an opportunity and I think that's only a good thing for Australian cricket."
The three matches of the series will be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (February 17), Kardinia Park in Geelong (February 19 ) and the Adelaide Oval (February 22).
The squad for the three-match T20I series will be announced on Wednesday. The squad will work with the triumvirate of acting head coach Justin Langer and assistant coaches Ricky Ponting and Jason Gillespie, who will assume those roles in the absence of Darren Lehmann and his assistants Graeme Hick, David Saker and Greg Blewett, who will be in India.

Hardik Pandya to lead India A in practice game against Australia
Allrounder Hardik Pandya has been chosen to lead a 15-member India A squad for the practice game against Australia, the selection committee confirmed on Tuesday (January 31). While announcing the squad for the one-off Test against Bangladesh, the committee also revealed the 15 names for the three-day warm-up tie that will be played in CCI, Mumbai from February 16-18, ahead of the four-match Test series between India and Australia.
Hardik, who has been featuring regularly in the limited-overs formats, is yet to make his Test debut for India but has been a part of the squad since the first Test against England. He is also a part of the A squad for the three-day game against Bangladesh, which will be led by Abhinav Mukund.
While Priyank Panchal and Shreyas Iyer have been retained, Akhil Herwadkar and Ankit Bawne are the new additions. The duo replaces Mukund and Ishank Jaggi. Herwadkar averaged 42.45 in the Ranji season and Bawne averaged an impressive 57.25. Young sensation Rishabh Pant has also been retained in the squad but Ishan Kishan is the designated gloveman.
With Jayant Yadav picked for the Indian team, Karnataka spinner Krishnappa Gowtham replaces him as the third spinner apart from Shahbaz Nadeem and Kuldeep Yadav. The pace attack has a new look to it with Navdeep Saini, Ashok Dinda and Mohammed Siraj getting rewarded for their recent domestic form. None of these three pacers are part of the squad for the Bangladesh game. Rahul Singh and Baba Indrajith have replaced wicketkeeper Nitin Saini and allrounder Vijay Shankar.

Russell handed one-year ban for doping whereabouts violation
West Indies allrounder Andre Russell has been handed a one-year ban from cricket for failing to file his whereabouts three times in 2015. An independent anti-doping tribunal delivered the verdict in Kingston on Tuesday (January 31). The ban will be effective from January 31, 2017 and will end on January 30, 2018.
Russell, who is recovering from a hamstring injury sustained recently in the Big Bash League, was hopeful of escaping a ban but the tribunal found him guilty of violating the World Anti-Doping Agency's (WADA) guidelines, where a player missing three tests within a period of 12 months amounts to a failed dope test. The 28-year-old might appeal the ban as confirmed by his lawyer Patrick Foster.
The charge was pressed by the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO) in March 2016 after Russell was named in the West Indies squad for the T20 WC in India, a tournament that he went on to win a month later. Later, Russell pleaded innocence by stating that he couldn't file his whereabouts due to his busy cricketing commitments and hence had asked his agent Will Quinn to handle proceedings. He went on to mention that he hadn't been properly trained to file whereabouts.
He also revealed in July last year during the Caribbean Premier League that it had been 'stressing and depressing' for him to carry on playing with the hearings happening at the same time.
Apart from representing West Indies on the international stage, Russell also plays for various clubs around the world including Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League and the ban will now force the teams to bring in a temporary reinforcement.
