BCCI denies S Sreesanth permission to play in Scotland

S Sreesanth’s plans to come back to competitive cricket was dashed today as the BCCI denied the India fast bowler NOC (No Objection Certificate) to play league cricket in Scotland.

Sreesanth had been trying to play league cricket in Scotland this year but the BCCI, which had imposed a life ban on him following his alleged involvement in the IPL spot-fixing scandal in 2013, has refused to give him the necessary permission.

According to an ESPNcricinfo report, a BCCI official confirmed that they had not obliged his request.

In May 2013, Sreesanth and two other Rajasthan Royals bowlers – Ankit Chavan and Ajit Chandila – were arrested for alleged involvement in spot-fixing. All three players were later banned for life by the BCCI.

In 2015, Sreesanth was cleared of spot-fixing charges by a Delhi trial court due to insufficient evidence under the MCOCA act, a special law passed by the Maharashtra state government to tackle organised crime syndicates and terrorism.

Bangladesh are set to arrive in Hyderabad on Thursday (February 2) for the one-off Test match against India and will be playing India A in a two-day practice game (February 5-6) at Gymkhana Ground, Secunderabad to prepare for the same.

The Test match against hosts India starts a week later, on Thursday (February 9), at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad, after having been postponed by a day to accommodate the weekend and draw in larger crowds.

This will be Bangladesh's first-ever bilateral tour to India, seventeen years after they were granted Test status in 2000, and will see them play their first ever Test match on Indian soil. And the long-awaited opportunity follows a hiccup, after the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) had earlier written to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) ruing lack of funds as an impediment to host the India-Bangladesh Test. That seems to have been resolved now, allowing Hyderabad to host the historic match between the neighbours.

Hameed, Duckett in MCC squad for curtain-raiser clash against Middlesex

Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) have picked a strong squad for the county season's traditional curtain-raiser against the Champion county in Abu Dhabi which starts on Sunday 26th March. Haseeb Hameed and Ben Duckett are included after both playing for England this winter and Jack Leach, the Somerset's left-arm spinner, has also been selected, it was announced on Friday (January 27).

The side to play Middlesex is selected in close collaboration with the England selectors and will be captained by Kent's Sam Northeast. It contains players from seven different counties including two apiece from Hampshire, Somerset and Worcestershire as well as Kent. Lancashire, Northamptonshire and Yorkshire are the other counties represented.

For Duckett in particular it is an opportunity to reaffirm his quality in the first-class game after being dropped during the Test series against India after struggling with the spin of R Ashwin. Hameed fared rather better and is almost guaranteed to open the batting with Alastair Cook in the first Test against South Africa at Lord's in July but the match will provide excellent preparation for Lancashire's first Championship match against Essex.

Leach's inclusion is also important after the recent revelation that his action required minor remedial action to correct a fault which called in to question the legality of his bowling. After the struggles of Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali in India, Leach has a strong chance of being included in England's Test team this summer. He will also, along with batsmen Joe Clarke and Tom Alsop, be part of the England Lions squad which tours Sri Lanka next month.

Stuart Law appointed West Indies coach

Former Australia cricketer Stuart Law has been appointed West Indies' head coach. The 48-year-old takes over after finalising a two-year contract with the West Indies Cricket Board.

The West Indies team, has been without a coach for nearly four months following Phil Simmons's sacking in September last year. Law now joins a new-look West Indies team, headed by director of cricket Jimmy Adams and chairman of selectors Courtney Browne.

Law, who will be the third Australian to coach West Indies, will start working with the team, hoping to help it ride over turbulent times, from February 15. Surprisingly, Law's contract comes to an end on February 2019, a few months before the world cup. But more importantly, in the immediate future, he has the task of helping West Indies finish the September 2017 deadline as the top eight ranked team in order to help the side secure a direct qualification for the 2019 world cup. West Indies are currently placed ninth in ODI rankings, two points behind Pakistan and four behind Bangladesh.

"I am excited at the opportunity to contribute to what I think is an interesting time for West Indies," said Law. "I think this assignment has come at an important time of my career."

The departing cricket director Richard Pybus helped appoint Law, and hailed the addition. Jimmy Adams, who will take over from Pybus said Law takes charge at an "exciting and crucial time".

"He comes at an exciting and critical time in the development of the West Indies men's team, with the emergence of some outstanding young talent, as seen in the most recent Test series against Pakistan.

Law has had similar coaching stints with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, while also being part of the coaching team for Australia and Big Bash League team Brisbane Heat. His first stint as West Indies head coach will come during the home One-Day International series against England in March.

"His core functions will include improved team results while providing leadership to players and team management," the release added.
