India fitness trainer Shankar Basu to take break due to "personal reasons"

Shankar Basu, India's strength and conditioning trainer, has opted for a break from the Indian team for personal reasons. Basu will be away from the Indian team for their One-Day International and T20 International series against England, and also the lone Test against Bangladesh in February. Anand Date has been appointed the strength & conditioning trainer of the Indian team for these series.

Basu has been with the team India since the Sri Lanka tour in 2015, and has also been a part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore side.

There were reports earlier that Basu had handed his resignation to the Board of Control for Cricket in India on December 26. The decision is understood to have come after the fifth Test between India and England in Chennai, following injuries to several players. BCCI had requested Basu to change his mind and reconsider the decision.

It looks now like Basu has opted for a month long break instead of resigning from his post as the India's strength and conditioning trainer.

T20 format can take cricket to many countries: McGrath
Twenty20 format, with each team playing 20 overs, has the ability to take cricket to many countries where it is not being played, according to former Australian cricketer Glenn McGrath.

For instance, it is nice to see the way Afghanistan played in last World Cup. “We want more such countries playing the game internationally,” he said in a conversation with N Ram, Chairman of Kasturi & Sons Ltd, at an event organised by the Chennai International Centre.

More the number of countries involved in cricket, better it is for the game, he said.

“I was surprised to know that people play cricket in Italy, Canada and US. We think, cricket is played in 12-15 countries, but actually the game is played in 60-70 countries,” he said.

With T-20 format, hopefully, more countries will play the game, watch it more and see how they go about in playing the game internationally, said McGrath whose cricketing career spanned for nearly 15 years. He took 563 test wickets — highest by any pace bowler — and 381 one-day international wickets for Australia. He retired from international cricket in 2007 and is currently director of the MRF Pace Foundation.

“When I first started to play T-20, and when the Indian Premier League came about, I was a bit concerned about the negativity it will have on test cricket. In the second IPL in South Africa, I even voiced my concerns to a team mate who said T-20 format would bring more people to the game, which will be fast and exciting. And, that’s what is happening with the game reaching more places,” said McGrath.

On different formats
On his preference among the three different formats – test match, one day and T-20 – in the game, McGrath said as a player he would like to play in all the three that need different game plan, different attitude and different mentality.

Top batsmen like Virat Kohli (India) Joe Roots (England) and Steve Smith (Australia) can play well in all three formats. A quality batsman with good technique can perform in all formats. “However, I still feel test match is the ultimate in the game, and that’s the format I enjoyed the most,” he said.

Countries like India and Australia are lucky to have cricketers playing in all the formats. However, the issue is with cricketers in countries like West Indies or New Zealand where it is more seasonal.

“We will see individual teams for test cricket, one-day and T-20,” he said.
