Virat Kohli completes 1000 test runs in 2016

Virat Kohli scored his 15th Test century against England on the third day of play in the fourth Test at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The world no 3 in Test rankings, Kohli has improved his performances in the longest format of the game while being the top ranked fixture in ODIs and T20s. His inning against England was laced with 11 boundaries and saw him play a steady knock even with partners falling at the other end.

In the 121st over of the Indian chase to England’s 400, Kohli drove a Jake Ball delivery towards the covers region to pick up a single and jump in the air in jubilant celebrations. He went on to punch the air and take in the adulation from the crowd which has seen many a legends of cricket score brilliant tons in its history.

Moreover, Kohli broke and established many milestones on the day in Mumbai. He brought up his 1000 Test runs in 2016 and took his overall tally in all international competitions beyond 2,400 runs. The Delhi player amassed 739 runs in ODIs and 641 runs in T20Is.
Kohli began the Test with 3959 runs to his name and went beyond 4,000 runs during his century inning.

2016 has been a pulsating year for Kohli and the numbers back that up. He became the highest run scorer in international cricket during his inning and went past Joe Root. The England batsman has 2399 runs to his name as against that of Kohli’s 2,400+ and counting.

The Indian skipper increased his tally in the series to over 500 runs with 40, 49*, 167, 81, 62, 6* prior to the hundred in Mumbai.

Murali Vijay becomes first Indian opener to hit Test hundred at Wankhede in 14 years

Murali Vijay on Saturday became the first Indian opener to score a Test hundred in 14 years at Wankhede stadium as India post a strong reply to England's first innings total of 400 in the fourth Test match .

Vijay, 32, reached the milestone off 231 balls in the first session of third day's play in Mumbai. He thus became the second batsman, after team-mate Cheteshwar Pujara, to hit two hundreds in the five-match series.

It's also his eighth overall ton, and third against England.

The last opener to score a hundred at the venue was Virender Sehwag, against West Indies in 2002. Legendary Sunil Gavaskar is the only other Indian opener to get a hundred at Wankhede.

1112 runs by Kohli in 2016 in Tests is the most for an Indian captain in a year. He went past 1095 runs by Rahul Dravid in 2006. Four hundreds by him is the joint most for an Indian captain in a calendar year, along with Sachin Tendulkar (in 1997).

Kohli became the second Indian captain to aggregate 500 or more runs in a series. He currently has 552 runs from seven innings at 138.00 in this series so far. The only other player to do it was Gavaskar who scored 732 against West Indies in 1978/79 and 500 against England in 1981/81.
