French Open: Venus Williams becomes first seed to fall in Paris

Former World No.1 Venus Williams became the first seed to crash out of the French Open as she was upset by Urszula Radwanska of Poland in the first round here.

The American, seeded 30th, and the 37th-ranked Pole traded errors, winners and breaks to neutral effect, until at last Radwanska emerged the 7-6(5), 6-7(4), 6-4 victor after three hours and 19 minutes, reports Xinhua.

Roger vs Somdev, today

India's Somdev Devvarman sailed into the second round of the men's singles event at the French Open with a straight-sets win over Daniel Munoz-de La Nava.

It took Devvarman a little more than two-and-a-half hours to get the better of his Spaniard opponent 6-3 6-3 7-5. And thanks to this win, waiting for him at the other end of the second round encounter on Wednesday is the most successful player in pro tennis history, Roger Federer.

The 188th ranked Devvarman, however, has played the Swiss in the past -- a couple of years ago on the hard courts of Dubai. The Indian had lost in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. But on clay and with his ability to run down balls for hours, the 27-year old will hope to make a better fist of their Court Phillipe Chatrier face-off.

On his part, Federer, the 2009 French Open champion, breezed past Spanish qualifier Pablo Carreno Busta 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 without a hitch on the first of three Sundays that marks this event at Roland Garros, the only Slam that lasts a period of more than two weeks.

Playing at Roland Garros for the 15th year in a row, Federer earned a big roar from after he closed out the victory with a picturesque backhand winner. Federer lost only seven points on his first serve and was broken just once by Carreno Busta.

Djokovic into French Open second round

World number one Novak Djokovic, bidding to win a first French Open and become just the eighth man to complete a career Grand Slam, beat David Goffin of Belgium 7-6 (7/5), 6-4, 7-5 on Tuesday to reach the second round.

The top-seeded Serb will face Guido Pella of Argentina for a place in the last 32. "Thanks to all the fans for waiting. It was a good match, David is a good player and has a lot of talent," said Djokovic. "I'm happy to win and hope to continue like this."

Djokovic, the runner-up to Rafael Nadal in 2012, had waited patiently to get his first round underway after heavy rain had robbed the schedule of more than four hours of play.

But Goffin, who made the last 16 in 2012 after coming through qualifying, was not overawed by the challenge but lacked the firepower to consistently trouble the world number one.

After taking the first set on the tie-break, the 26-year-old Australian Open champion was 2-1 up with a break in the second before Goffin, the world number 58, levelled for 4-4.

The Serb clawed that break back immediately in the ninth game before going on to secure a two-sets lead.

A break in the 11th game of the third was all Djokovic needed to secure victory in the next game with a swooping forehand.

Now things could get more interesting for Federer

There wasn't much trouble for Federer in the second round Wednesday, when he beat two-time NCAA singles champion Somdev Devvarman 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 in less than 1½ hours.

After a pair of straightforward and straight-set victories at the French Open against qualifiers ranked outside the top 150, the 17-time major champion will face a seeded player, France's Julien Benneteau, who not only already beat Federer once this year but also came within two points of upsetting him at Wimbledon, of all places, in 2012.
