India will take on England in the fifth and final Test of the series starting Friday at Chennai. The MA Chidambaram stadium has been witness to some classic moments over the years. CricWaves relives five of them.
Virender Sehwag’s stunning 83 from 68 balls in 2008:
Sehwag was the architect of one of India’s most stunning chases against England in 2008. India were chasing 387 to win, and Sehwag smashed 83 from 68. Rest is history, quite literally.
Pakistan’s famous win, and India’s choke in 1999: India were chasing a tough 271 to win the Test. In spite of a bad back, Tendulkar compiled a masterful 136. Till the time he was at the crease, India were hopeful of victory. But, a mistimed sweep against Saqlain Mushtaq saw Tendulkar fall with the score reading 254 for 7. India were all out four runs later, Saqlain finishing with five wickets.
India chase 155 to win historic 2001 series: The famous series was tied 1-1. India chasing 155 to win the series had crumbed under intense pressure built by Aussie bowlers. But, Samir Dighe and Harbhajan Singh, the bowling hero, joined forces to seal the deal in India’s favour.

There have only been two tied Tests ever in history. The second was played at Chennai, then Madras under extremely scorching conditions. There was no shortage of drama in the Test as well.
Sachin Tendulkar’s impeccable 155 at Chennai: This was the played during the series in 1998. Tendulkar had played a rash stroke in the first innings, and faced criticism for the same. In the second innings, he came in and began what was to be the start of the nightmare for Shane Warne. He famously hit him against the rough, and will exemplary success. It remains arguably one of the master blaster’s finest knocks, as India went on to clinch the Test by an 179 runs.
