In a first-of-its-kind initiative by an IT association, Federation of IT Associations of Gujarat (FITAG), the umbrella body of 24 regional IT associations will distribute one lakh refurbished or re-generated PCs to needy people in B- and C- class cities across the state.

To be distributed free of cost, the PCs would be assembled from more than three lakh units that include upgrades for newer ones, or end-of-life PCs.

“The donation drive is FITAG’s contribution to the society in reducing e-waste,” said Yogesh Thakkar, President FITAG. “We will collect about three lakh used PCs every year. We have already started re-assembling work. The donations would begin by late 2012 or early 2013,” he said.

The association is also charting a distribution map for the mission. Thakkar said that although the PCs would be donated, FITAG will form a uniform distribution policy. “It is more about inclusion of smaller partners and distributors rather than money. Five to six members would be dedicated for the activity,” he said.

The roadmap in place, FITAG will approach the ICT department of the Government of Gujarat for a formal approval. “We will talk to the heads of various departments whose PCs have either reached end-of-life or are being upgraded,” he said.
